“Yi Peng” festival or known as “Lanterns Festival” is the part of “Loy Krathong” festival which will be held on the first full moon night in November every year.

WHAT IS LOY KRATHONG?

‘Loy’ means to float and ‘Krathong’ is a small container made of banana trunk decorated with banana leaves, flowers, and candles.

Thai people float the “Krathong” onto the river regarding to the beliefe that it will be taking away the sorrows and letting go of hatred and anger alongside with paying homage to the spirits of the rivers.

In the Loy Krathong night, the river will lighten up by the candlelight from all Krathong floating on it.

“Loy Krathong” will be celebrated in every part of Thailand. The best place to celebrate this festival is Bangkok, Sukhothai and of course, where the “Yi Peng” festival will occur at Chiang Mai.

WHAT IS YI PENG?

“Yi” means “2nd” and “Peng” means “Month” , according to ‘Lanna Language’. This festival will be held on the Fullmoon night of 2nd month in the Lanna calendar.
Same as “Krathong”, people will launch the paper lanterns into the sky believing it will take away the bad luck and sorrows.

“Yi Peng” is held in the northern of Thailand, mainly in Chiang Mai which used to be the capital of Lanna Kingdom back in past around almost 500 years ago.

WHEN YI PENG WILL BE HELD?

This festival will usually be taking place two days before “Loy Krathong” but people will not launch the lanterns into the sky until the Loy Krathong night so make sure you will be there at the right time.

WHEN IS LOY KRATHONG?

Due to Loy Krathong Festival will be held on the full moon night so the date won’t be exactly the same every year. So what you must do is check the lunar calendar or look at it here:

There are various options of where to see and launch the lanterns. You can either go on tour with meals package or go with the free option around the city

The Closed Ceremony and Parade of Yi Peng

If you miss the opening ceremony, don’t be sad because there will be a closed ceremony on the last day of Yi Peng festival and it’s even bigger than the first day. The ceremony and the parade will be taking place at the same place and at the same time.
