4 Less-Visited Thailand Destinations I Love

Thailand is known for so many amazing cities and destinations. Tourists especially love the main 5 ones - Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Pattaya and maybe even Kanchanburi.

In the past year I have explored much of Thailand, more than I have in 21 years of living here and I found some beautiful destinations that not many tourists know of or visit. Here they are:

Chonburi

Normally people go to Pattaya but skip the more local parts of the the Chonburi province. Even closer to Bangkok is the city of Chonburi, which has a lot of local attractions.

We heard about the Chonburi grand canyon on Pantip, which we simply had to see.

Nearby is a local beach as well with awesome seafood at decent price. The beach isn't so clean or nice to swim in but I don't mind. I prefer eating and drinking on the beach anyways.

Known for: local beaches, temples, and seafood

Chanthaburi

Many people go as far as Trat to visit Koh Chang but on the way there is a charming province and downtown called Chantaburi.

This place has a beautiful town, home to many communities - Vietnamese, Chinese and Khmer. They all have influenced and been influenced by other cultures as well. French ruled the area from 1893 to 1905 so you can see some European architecture and communities as well.

It's a very different and unique city, one that I really enjoyed exploring, especially the old town and coastal roads. There was just so much character and personality here.

Known for: national parks, beautiful coastal drives, mangrove forests, local beaches, gem trade and seafood

Doi Ang Khang

Chiang Mai is awesome but did you know there is more to it than just the main city area? We drove up further north up in the mountains, close to the border with Burma to a place called Doi Ang Khang. It is a beautiful mountainous region where the temperatures can drop as close to 0 °C degrees in winter.

Our trip here was spontaneous and we opted to go to this place over Pai. There are a lot less foreigners here but plenty of Thai tourists and locals. One of our best and top places to visit in Thailand by far.

It felt like we were in another country, in fact!

Known for: camping, beautiful views, serene landscape and temperate climate fruits, flowers and vegetables

Must see places: Royal Agricultural Station // Mu Ban Khum village // Kiu Lom Viewpoint // cherry blossoms in the winter (December-Jan)

Prachuap Khiri Khan

Although Hua Hin, a very popular tourist destination and is part of Prachuap Khiri Khan (PKK), I went further down south to PKK city district where I explored several little towns nearby such as Kui Buri, Ao Manao, Ban Krut and Bang Saphan. I simply loved the main city of PKK exploring and noticing the local life. There was so much to do here - yummy seafood, safari, hiking mountains, swimming, snorkeling, quiet lifestyles and so much more.
