Departing from the Mae Kampong homestay, we headed towards Chiang Mai city to pick up an additional member of our group at the airport before continuing our journey to the Pa Bong Piang rice terraces.
Departing from Chiang Mai Airport, follow Highway 108 towards Chom Thong. Continue straight until you reach the Chom Thong district. Turn right following the signs for Doi Inthanon. Upon reaching the checkpoint, pay the park entrance fee. Proceed approximately 40 km to the second checkpoint. At the fork ahead, take the left path towards Mae Chaem and the Pa Bong Piang rice terraces. However, we will first ascend to the summit of Doi Inthanon to explore the Ang Ka Nature Study Trail.
Nature Study Trail Ang Ka
The Ang Ka Nature Study Trail: A Fairytale-like Experience
Nestled atop Doi Inthanon in Chom Thong District, Chiang Mai, the Ang Ka Nature Study Trail offers a captivating journey into the heart of Thailand's natural beauty. Situated near the radar tower and temperature measurement point, this 300-meter wooden bridge trail transforms into a breathtaking spectacle during the rainy season.
As the forest awakens with the arrival of the monsoon, lush greenery carpets the landscape, adorning every nook and cranny with vibrant hues. Moss and tiny ferns cling to the towering trees, creating an enchanting tapestry of life. The air hangs heavy with the scent of damp earth and fresh foliage, while a gentle mist dances through the air, shrouding the path in an ethereal veil.
As you traverse the wooden bridge, the symphony of nature unfolds before your eyes. Towering trees, draped in emerald cloaks, form a verdant canopy overhead, filtering the sunlight into a dappled mosaic. The gentle pitter-patter of raindrops on the leaves creates a soothing rhythm, inviting you to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the moment.
With each step, the feeling of stepping into a fairytale realm intensifies. The vibrant flora, the misty atmosphere, and the symphony of sounds transport you to a world where nature reigns supreme. It is a place where worries fade away, replaced by a sense of awe and wonder.
The Ang Ka Nature Study Trail is a testament to the transformative power of nature. It is a sanctuary where one can reconnect with the earth, find solace in its beauty, and experience the magic that lies hidden within its depths.
Light rain falls, but we are prepared with raincoats for any situation.
It is 3 pm, but the fog is still thick and the air is pleasantly cool at 14 degrees.
Stop by for a photo at the viewpoint opposite the Kiw Mae Pan parking lot. During the rainy season, Kiw Mae Pan is closed.
From the intersection, we turned towards Mae Chaem and drove until we reached the Mae Pan Waterfall sign. We parked our car at the waterfall parking lot and hired a car to take us further (we had contacted the car in advance and booked our accommodation). The price of the car from the Mae Pan Waterfall parking lot to the Pa Bong Piang terraced rice fields was 700 baht for a round trip. The road was muddy, with sharp turns in some sections and narrow with a drop-off on one side. Only 4x4 vehicles with experienced drivers could pass. However, if you go via Mae Chaem, the road is much easier, and even a regular pickup truck can manage it.
A group of us hired a car and stayed at Baan Rabeang Na, Khun Bati's homestay. We took photos in front of the homestay, which is surrounded by a pumpkin garden. The view here is the highest and most beautiful. If we come again, we will definitely choose to stay at Khun Bati's homestay.
Sornchai Homestay
Come stay at our homestay tonight! We are staying at Mr. Sonchai's homestay, which consists of two houses located in the middle of a rice field with unobstructed views. Contact number: 097-1916131. 500 baht/person including dinner and breakfast. Bedding is provided. Private bathroom but separate from the house.
The room is small and can accommodate four people. There is no electricity, but there are lanterns, candles, and mosquito repellent. In front of the room is a terrace where you can sit and enjoy the view, eat, and do other activities.
Room view
The owner of the home delivered rice to the residence.
The dinner was not to my taste, but I was hungry and ate everything.
After a satisfying meal, relax and enjoy the view.
Walking to see the rice field in front of the house, unfortunately we were unlucky, it rained all the time, we didn't see the light through the clouds and fog reflecting on the water in every rice field.

Our little house
The sun has set, and the light has faded. There is no electricity, so we must rely on candlelight. The atmosphere in the bathroom is…
(Please note that the original text ends abruptly. To complete the translation, I would need more context about the atmosphere in the bathroom. Is it peaceful? Eerie? Romantic? Please provide additional information so I can accurately convey the intended meaning.)
Evening activities: chatting under candlelight, with full phone and internet signal.
Feeling sleepy, we went inside to sleep. There were some mosquitoes, and the weather was a bit chilly.
The sky occasionally cleared, revealing glimpses of the stars, but it was mostly overcast with thick clouds. Even the sunrise was obscured by mist. Although we didn't see the sun, we were treated to a beautiful view of the fog. The backdrop of the Pa Bong Piang rice terraces was a verdant mountain range dotted with numerous cornfields, creating a checkerboard pattern that seemed to symbolize the region.
Breakfast
I'm back. Let's continue to Mae Chaem.
We drove into Mae Chaem to see the rice terraces, but we got lost and didn't reach our destination. We ended up exploring the places that Google Maps took us to.
Wat Phutthaen
The temple's front has a well with a constant flow of water, which villagers collect for consumption.
The photo was taken from outside the temple as I was not dressed appropriately to enter.
Our plan was to have lunch at Nam Ok Hu, a new tourist attraction in Mae Chaem, about 20 kilometers from Wat Phutthaen. However, the place was deserted. We suspect it is only open on weekends and holidays.
We then traveled back along the Inthanon route to Chiang Mai, to continue our journey to Chiang Dao.
The terraced rice fields of Pa Bong Piang may have simple accommodations and food, but the views and atmosphere surrounding the lodging are beautiful and well worth the trip. The journey is a bit difficult, but that's part of its charm.
The total cost of the trip for four people, including food, accommodation, car rental, and fuel, averaged 1200 baht per person.
Our next destination is Chiang Dao. Stay tuned for more updates soon! (This trip is 4 days and 3 nights: Mae Kampong Village, Pa Bong Bieng Village, Lisu Homestay, Chiang Dao)
