According to the plan, our destination today is Sighisoara. Anyhow, we are going to stop along the way to visit other places as well.
We enjoy the view on both sides along the way. We go pass a small village and colorful flower field. It is so beautiful that we can't resist but ask John to stop for some photos.
And now we arrive at our first destination of the day at Medias which is about 25 km away from Sibiu and it takes about one and a half hours.
Although Medias is a small town, it has important attractions for us to roam around. We spend around 1 hour wandering around the old town.
The most striking thing in the old town is the St. Margaret Evangelical Church in Gothic style. The outstanding part is the clock tower where the doll comes out to ring the bell loudly in every hour.
Nearby the St. Margaret Evangelical Church is the Stephan Ludwig Roth House.
Around the old town Medias is very classic and tranquil.
From the old town, we see small hills. This hill locates a cemetery. I asked john to take us there to see Medias from the higher angle. Here, the clock tower of St. Margaret Evangelical Church looks very outstanding.
From Medias, we now move towards Biertan Village. Along the way, we go pass Richis Village, a small rural village as well. It gives us such a rural atmosphere and we also asked John to stop so we can explore around a bit. We also take this opportunity to relax from sitting in the car too.
This church is closed when no religious ritual is performed. Anyhow, we can call to the staff to open for us if we wanted to visit inside. John helps us to make a call but he can't reach the staff so we miss visiting inside.
I guess the main occupation for people around here is farming.
I've never thought to see the horse dragging wooden wagon like this in Europe.
We walk on foot to explore this town and the children give us full attention about it.
It is a very quiet village.
We also receive smiles on people's faces along the way. Now that the rain starts to fall, it's time to say goodbye to this village and move forward to Biertan Village.
It's noon when we reach Biertan Village so the first thing we do is to find food before wandering around this village.
John takes us to Medieval Restaurant which is located at the entrance of Biertan Fortified Church, the iconic attraction of Biertan.
I thought we have to give up on this restaurant as people are packed. But when we come in, the staff takes us to the second floor, which is the attic room. It's beautifully decorated.
Soon, the food is served.
This dish looks like pork steak.
This is a wrapped dough, stuffed with ham and cheese. It's quite delicious.
The soup comes with a good taste.
What must not be missed is the pumpkin cake topped with yogurt and cheese.
It is served with shredded cabbage and salad dressing. This meal is 160 lei for 5 of us.
Biertan Fortified Church is open for tour as per specified time. After asking for the time, the staff said we can tour at 14.00 p.m. Now that we have some times left, we wander around the village first.
It is a refreshing and quiet small village located among the valleys. I see a big bird builds its nest at the chimney of the house too.
It is so quiet that it looks almost like a deserted village. I see almost no one or probably they all have gone out for farming.
No matter where you are at in the village, you can clearly see the Biertan Fortified Church.
Fortified Church is church of this town. In addition to being a place for performing religious rituals, it also serves as the refuge place for people in the event of war. It is densely surrounded with fortresses and towers. Throughout Transylvania region, there are more than 150 of this kind of churches of which 7 of them have been registered as the World Cultural Heritage and Biertan Fortified Church is one of those 7 churches.
Before visiting the Biertan Fortified Church, we must pay an admission fee of 10 lei each at the ticket booth that we walk along the wall and wooden roof which finally lead to the small hill.
At the end of the stairs, a large church is there. It's so huge that I can't capture the entire image of it. We can also view the Biertan Village from the higher angle here.
Towers are located around the wall of the church. These towers has the murals inside depicting life of Romanians for the visitors to see.
Inside the church looks tall and grand. The movie is filmed on the day I visited too.
