Why Hippocampus Should Be Your Next Destination for Friendship and Inspiration

Seeking friendship and inspiration? Look no further than Hippocampus! After reading this review, you'll understand why. I've never experienced such positive energy after staying anywhere before, and I'm thrilled to share my experience with you. So, pack your bags and follow me on this journey!

'Hippocampus' is a small hidden accommodation in Chiang Dao district, Chiang Mai province. There are 3 houses in total: the first one is blue, the second one is a rice barn, and the third one is the house of 'พี่พิม และ พี่เรียว', the owners. From the front of the house, you can see the view of Doi Luang Chiang Dao, which is different every day. In the middle is a large field that used to be a rice paddy. Now that the harvest is over, the owners have planted sunflowers. Next to it is the home of the flock of ducks, geese, and chickens. The 3 cats walk around the area.

Why the name 'Hippocampus'?

The name of the accommodation comes from the fact that Ryo, one of the owners, has a Land Rover that he loves dearly. He named it Hippo (you can see it parked next to his house if you visit). Pim, the other owner, wanted to include the word "hippo" in the name. They then came across the word "Hippocampus," which is the name of the part of the brain responsible for long-term memory. This resonated with them, as they wanted guests to remember their stay for a long time.

As mentioned earlier, there are only two houses available for guests.
The first one is a blue single-story house that can accommodate 2-4 people.
The second one is a rice barn that the owners bought from a farmer and renovated to be cute and comfortable.
This time, Ping and her friends stayed in the rice barn.
Let's go explore our rice barn house together! :D

The ground floor has a hammock for lounging and a medium-sized table.

The second floor is a bedroom, bathroom, and balcony.

which is very cute, like an attic room, but has

all the amenities, from a refrigerator, air conditioning,

a water heater, towels, but my favorite is

the unique shower gel and shampoo of this place.

It's relaxing and refreshing, perfect for nature lovers. <3

Why are there only two houses?

Hippocampus: A Home Away from Home

This article will share my experience staying at Hippocampus, a unique homestay where you live alongside the owners. We'll explore the questions you might have, just as I did before my visit.

Hippocampus is a true homestay experience. You'll share meals and living space with Pim and Ryo, the owners who built and maintain everything themselves. From designing and decorating the house to clearing the grass, planting rice, raising animals, cleaning, hosting guests, and cooking, they do it all.

"We only have two houses because we feel that if we had more, we wouldn't be able to take care of everything properly," Pim explains. "We don't want to hire anyone to do it. We want to do everything ourselves because it's our home."

A little after 5 pm, it was time to feed the ducks, geese, and chickens.

Pim assigned this task to us, which was… 5555555555

It was fun! We started by mixing the food for the animals, then let them out to play. We walked with them, fed them, and gave them water.

One funny story is about a duck that always follows the geese. Wherever the geese go, it follows. Whatever the geese do, it does the same. It doesn't stay with the other ducks.

Pim told us that this duck's mother wouldn't incubate its egg, so Pim incubated it herself. When it hatched, she put it with the other ducks, but its siblings and mother wouldn't accept it. However, the geese were okay with it.

So, the duck thinks it's a goose! It even has a "Team Goose" hashtag now.

Oh, the little one! 5555555555 So cute! <3

Another charm of this place is the view of Doi Luang Chiang Dao,
which we can see clearly from the front of the house!
Pim and Riew, our hosts, would invite us to watch it both in the morning
and in the evening because it would be beautiful in different ways and not
the same at all. I wish our house had a view like this :’D

At 7 pm sharp, Pim called us for dinner. Today's menu was stir-fried chicken with dried chilies and goose egg stew (from the geese in the house). Normally, I wouldn't eat stew if I had a choice. That day was one of those times when I didn't have a choice. So I had to eat it. But as soon as I took a bite, I was like, "Can I have some more?" 55555555 It was so delicious, both dishes. Pim said that before this, she and Ryo weren't good at cooking. But when they decided to move to Chiang Dao, they realized they couldn't take the BTS to their favorite restaurant anymore. If they wanted to eat delicious food, they had to learn how to cook it themselves. So, the good karma has now reached the guests. :p

This is a sentence.

Have you noticed that this place is different from other homestays?

Have you noticed how this place is different from other homestays? The answer is "This place has art." From the sculptures at the entrance to the decorations around the accommodation and the overall layout, everything here is infused with artistic expression.

After enjoying the vodka-infused jelly pictured above, we ended up chatting for two hours straight. We learned that Hippocampus is the culmination of the combined experiences of its two owners. Pim, a former travel and food writer (just like us!), and Ryo, an artist whose work adorns the property (except for the dining room, which features photographs of fighting fish by independent photographer Wisarut Angkathawanich).

Pim mentioned that they plan to change the artwork in the gallery regularly to keep things fresh and dynamic.

This is a blank paragraph.

Most guests who come here end up returning, becoming like family.

Hippocampus is not just a place to stay, but also a platform for exchanging stories and dreams between Pim, Ryow, and the guests. In addition to their backgrounds as writers and artists, we also talked about other things. Pim asked me what I was doing and what I wanted to do in the future. We talked about a lot of things, but the whole conversation made me realize the intention behind the creation of this place. I understand why they don't want to add more accommodations and why they want to maintain this warm atmosphere by taking care of everything themselves.

The happy moments always pass by quickly.
The next morning, we woke up to watch the sunrise before 6 am, but it was still pitch dark. So we woke up again at 6:30 am and saw nothing but fog! It was right in front of our house. After watching the fog, we went back to sleep and woke up again to have a homemade breakfast made by our older siblings at 8 am.

Breakfast Delights: A Culinary Journey

Two breakfast plates arrive, bearing a resemblance yet boasting distinct identities. The first, an American breakfast, presents a familiar comfort. The second, reminiscent of eggs Benedict, features a unique house-made sauce. Both dishes share a common thread: the vegetables adorning the salad are pesticide-free, sourced from the Royal Project, while the accompanying bread is freshly baked in-house.

Beverages can be chosen from the bar menu, each promising a delightful experience. However, a sweet finale is highly recommended: the house-made Japanese cheesecake and Thai tea pudding are guaranteed to melt in your mouth.

It's already time to say goodbye to Hippocampus. I didn't get to take any pictures with the staff, but luckily Pim took a picture of us. So I got this picture to end the review on a heartwarming note. :’) <3

Thank you Pim and Ryo for creating this place. Thank you for the positive energy and inspiration. Thank you for the delicious food, snacks, and drinks.

See you again.
