An image of a group of people standing in front of a building.
Beyond my wildest dreams...he is the best of the best, U Thong.
The image depicts a group of people standing in front of a building. The people are dressed in traditional Thai clothing. The building is a temple with a large, ornate roof. The image is likely from a religious ceremony or festival.
The phrase "never in my wildest dreams" perfectly describes our recent trip. Initially, we didn't even consider it a trip, as our journey with three friends was prompted by a somber occasion: attending a funeral at Wat Khao Disalak in U Thong District, Suphan Buri Province. After the ceremony, we had some time to spare, so we decided to explore the village or find another temple to visit. One of our friends, a local, suggested that if we wanted to pay our respects without traveling far, we could simply drive up the hill behind the temple where the funeral was held. This hill was also home to Wat Khao Disalak, where we could also pay homage to the footprint of the Buddha.

We all agreed without hesitation. The road up to the temple is accessible to both small and large vehicles, but drivers must exercise caution due to the winding nature of mountain roads. There is ample parking available at the temple. Upon exiting the vehicle, one is immediately struck by the breathtaking view. The beauty of Wat Khao Di Salak is comparable to any other tourist destination, despite its distance from the main attractions of Suphan Buri.
Khao Deesaluk Temple:
- The temple is accessible by car or by foot (2 km hike).
- The main attraction is the 108 Auspicious Buddha Footprints, a unique sandstone carving dating back thousands of years.
- This footprint differs from others due to its low-relief carving, lotus petal design, unevenly sized toes, and two toe joints.
- The Department of Fine Arts has registered it as an ancient artifact and built a Thai-style pavilion over it.
Replica Buddha Footprint:
- This replica footprint is also made of sandstone and exhibits distinct features.
- It measures 65.5 cm wide and 141.5 cm long.
- Archaeologists have differing opinions on its origin. Some believe it belongs to the Dvaravati period (14th-16th centuries CE), while others suggest a later Ayutthaya period (19th-23rd centuries CE) due to stylistic elements.
- Further research is needed to determine its true origin.
Additional Discoveries:
- Excavations at the temple revealed a cave containing Buddha statues and various artifacts.
Scenic Views and Activities:
- The temple offers breathtaking 180-degree panoramic views.
- Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere, explore the grounds, and admire the beautiful scenery.
- Activities include breathing fresh air, ringing the temple bell, making wishes, observing the majestic peacocks, and paying respects to the replica Buddha footprint.
The Fine Arts Department has registered it as an ancient artifact and built a beautiful Thai-style pavilion to cover it. There are staff members, who are also aunts and uncles living in nearby villages, to help provide guidance and take good care of the surrounding area. There is a way for us to climb to the top of the hill, where we can see the vast open fields and the intricate mountain ranges of U Thong district. It is truly a blessing for those interested in history and archaeology to visit and study.
The sacredness of the place brought a sense of peace and joy to my heart. The unexpected encounters and experiences with friends made this trip truly unforgettable. I never imagined I would find such a beautiful and inspiring place. Wat Khao Di Salak has left an indelible mark on my memory, and I hope to return again soon. U Thong, Suphan Buri, the city of brave people, will always hold a special place in my heart.
