Review: First Time in Sukhothai...A Small but Cool City

This trip to Sukhothai is not the first for my parents, but it is the first time for Sun-Sun to experience this city. Before the trip, Sun-Sun read a history book in comic format at school and then complained to her mother, "Sun-Sun really wants to cycle in the Sukhothai Historical Park. Please take me there, Mom."

Here we go! This time, I've planned everything from drawing, writing, sculpting, and even eating and traveling. The schedule is packed!

To reach Sukhothai, one can either drive or fly. This time, we opted for a flight with Bangkok Airways, a boutique airline renowned for its delicious sticky rice with banana filling in the lounge. We chose an early morning flight, departing at 7:00 AM. Waking up at 3:00 AM and leaving home at 5:00 AM, our day began with an exciting adventure.

Check out flights at this link if you don't want to arrive at the airport at the crack of dawn like us.

After checking in, I headed straight to the lounge to enjoy the renowned food and beverages, including the highly acclaimed sticky rice with banana filling.

We arrived at Sukhothai Airport around 8 am, and the car rental company we had contacted was waiting for us at the airport with a full tank of gas.

This time we used the service of "พี่หนึ่ง" Arunotai car rental. The car is good, the price is not expensive, and P'Nung is very kind. You can contact him here.

With our vehicle and crew ready, we embarked on our journey, making our first stop at "Suphat Sangkhalok".

At "Sutep Sangkhalok," another recommended learning center, children can participate in activities for nearly two hours without getting bored. Just seeing the various Sangkhalok ceramics displayed throughout the shop is a delight. Uncle Sutep, Aunt Nid, and their children are on hand to provide guidance on every step of the Sangkhalok pottery-making process.

The most enjoyable part was drawing fish, flower, or khit patterns on plates or glasses, followed by coloring them with a mixture of ash. We then waited with anticipation for about 7 days for the shop to fire and glaze them into Sangkhalok plates, which were then sent to our home by post. The three of us, father, mother, and child, competed fiercely, spending about 3 hours at the shop. Aunt Nid provided us with mango, boiled corn, and kluai nam wa bananas to eat. 55

Upon finishing the drawing, hunger pangs set in. Visiting Sukhothai necessitates indulging in its famous noodles. We opted for a local favorite, **Ta Pui Sukhothai Noodles**, a legendary establishment frequented by many. During our trip, we sampled various noodle options, from renowned eateries to local haunts. Let's delve into Ta Pui's offerings. The noodles retained their signature chewy texture, served plain for the little one and in a tangy broth for the parents. The accompanying satay skewers showcased the distinct Sukhothai style, emphasizing a sweet and approachable flavor profile.

Sunsun ate with gusto, not caring about his appearance. He easily devoured two bowls.

Design your own Sangkhalok-patterned T-shirt with "Brother Leng" at Wood Bridge.

A Small Shop with Big Creativity: Customizing Family Shirts at Wat Trapang Thong

Nestled near Wat Trapang Thong, a charming little shop awaits. Owned by a friendly artist, it offers a unique experience for families seeking personalized clothing with a touch of ancient Sangkhalok artistry.

The process begins with the artist guiding children through the creation of their own designs. These initial sketches serve as the foundation for the final artwork, which will be hand-painted onto the chosen garments.

The true magic unfolds as children unleash their imaginations, adding their own flourishes to the traditional Sangkhalok patterns. Whether it's intricate fish motifs or whimsical creatures, the artist encourages creativity and provides guidance when needed.

This interactive experience fosters a sense of ownership and pride in the finished product, turning each shirt into a cherished family heirloom.

For an hour, children will be entertained by this young female artist, who uses art as a medium to introduce tourists to Sukhothai in a truly remarkable way.

As the afternoon wore on, after two activities, Sun Sun was still cheerful, but Mom was starting to get sleepy. Not far from the front of Wat Trapang Thong, there was a small coffee shop called Krung Kao with a nice atmosphere. We turned in to quickly refuel with caffeine. This shop has a very delicious young coconut cake. I repeat, very, very, very delicious.

Don't miss out on the delicious chocolate cake! This bakery opens early, so come early to try the soft coconut cake before it sells out. Three people in our group shared three slices without any arguments.

Excellent accommodation for families... Si Wilai Sukhothai Resort & Spa

A boutique-style accommodation in the heart of the old town. Stepping inside, you can't help but say "wow." The simple rooms offer a Lanna feel, perfect for a family getaway. Room rates start at just over 3,000 baht, and the rooms are spacious. We went with three people and didn't even need to ask for an extra bed.

>>The expansive area features a large lotus pond.

>>An Eco-friendly swimming pool is available for Sun Sun to enjoy safely.

>>The view from the rice field stretches far into the distance, reaching the peak of Khao Luang mountain.

>>An ancient temple with a tall pagoda is another highlight in front of the resort.

Bicycles are available for rent to explore the Sukhothai Historical Park, which is only 1.2 km away.

This place is amazing! Not only does it meet all my needs, but they also serve delicious blue pea flower layered sweetmeat before bed. This is my favorite part. Plus, all the staff are incredibly friendly.

This morning, the weather is pleasant. To make this trip a dream come true for the children, we will go cycling at Sukhothai Historical Park. The children are very excited and can hardly eat their breakfast. They just want to go cycling.

Exploring the Old City on Two Wheels: A Family-Friendly Adventure

This activity offers a unique way to experience the charm of the old city with the whole family. While cars are no longer permitted within the city walls to promote a pollution-free environment, visitors can opt for various transportation options. Electric trams and vintage electric cars are available for rent, but renting bicycles provides a distinct advantage for families with children.

The park provides a map upon purchasing tickets, allowing children to navigate and explore the historical sites at their own pace. This encourages observation and a close encounter with the park's natural beauty. Additionally, cycling serves as a gentle form of exercise, making it an enjoyable and healthy activity for all ages. With rental prices starting at 30 baht per bike, this option offers an affordable and engaging way to explore the city's rich history.

The joy itself is already priceless.

For lunch, I recommend Say Hi restaurant, located right in front of the national park. It's a cozy café and eatery offering a diverse menu, including steaks, single-dish meals, khao soi, pad thai, and more. They also have cakes, honey toast, and ice cream. The portions are generous, and the food is delicious. The coffee is also excellent, and the prices are reasonable.

In the late afternoon, with a light drizzle, we continued our journey to another fascinating destination. Sukhothai is renowned for its amulets, and we decided to visit a place where they are made. We headed to "Baan Phra Phim Laksana Silp" to experience the art of clay molding.

Visiting the Sukhothai Printing House: A Journey into Faith and Tradition

The Sukhothai Printing House offers a unique opportunity for children to experience the rich history and religious significance of printing Buddha images. Under the guidance of "พี่กบ," a local expert who has been involved in the craft since the age of 11, children can learn about the traditional methods of preparing clay, firing, and creating durable Buddha images. The Printing House also boasts an impressive collection of over 850 different types of Buddha images, providing a glimpse into the diverse artistic expressions of Sukhothai's Buddhist faith.

Immerse your children in the rich tapestry of Buddhist art, guided by the authentic Sukhothai dialect of our esteemed storyteller, P'Kob. The experience culminates in a delightful exploration of traditional toys and captivating tales of Sukhothai life, drawn from P'Kob's own experiences as a "hunter." Prepare for an unforgettable journey that will leave your little ones yearning for more.

Budget-friendly accommodation

Viengtawan: A Charming and Affordable Stay

Viengtawan is a delightful and affordable accommodation option, offering a warm and clean environment. We discovered this gem on an online travel agency (OTA) website, attracted by its reasonable price. Opting out of breakfast, we secured a booking for under a thousand baht.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a small yet charming hotel boasting a refreshing swimming pool. The rooms, while not spacious, provided comfortable accommodation without feeling cramped. The front of the hotel features a delightful garden reminiscent of an English-style landscape, complete with intricate latticework designs that evoke the elegance of traditional Thai houses.

For budget-conscious travelers seeking a pleasant stay, Viengtawan is an excellent choice. It offers a comfortable and stylish experience at an affordable price.

The last day before returning… The place to visit will be in Sawankhalok District because I will be able to catch a flight back without having to rush. But because I wanted to have coffee at a certain shop, I drove almost an hour away. That is Baan Hom Klin Din in Thung Saliam District.

The sentence is already in English and does not require translation.

This restaurant is a favorite of mine. I visited once before when the rice fields were still green, and the atmosphere was incredibly relaxing. There are actually many interesting places to visit in Tung Saliam district. Next time, I plan to explore it more thoroughly. The coffee here is very aromatic, and the food, including steaks, salads, cakes, and snacks, is excellent. This time, I was particularly impressed by the acacia omelet and the mackerel salad rolls, which were served with chili paste. Wow, it was truly delicious! The coffee was also as strong as ever.

The final two stops on this trip were places I had long wanted to visit. The first was the stylish art farm at "Ronna Baan Rai", where you can eat, sleep, and relax in a truly rustic farmer's style. This is a learning center that encourages children to take a break from books and experience the artistic and rural lifestyle. The owner, "พี่นกกวี", is a writer and multi-talented artist who paints, photographs, and sculpts. Every Saturday and Sunday, he offers a variety of activities for children.

The rustic charm blends seamlessly with the modern design, showcasing the homeowner's artistic vision. Delicious food and excellent coffee are available, catering to both parents and children. Notably, Mr. Nok's captivating storytelling about Sukhothai adds to the experience. An overnight stay here would be delightful, offering warmth and hospitality from the family-run establishment. A return visit during the winter months is highly recommended to fully embrace the cozy atmosphere.

The final stop of our trip was the **Organic Agriculture Project at Sukhothai Airport**. This is where the delicious "rice" served on Bangkok Airways flights is grown, and every grain is free of chemicals. Families can enjoy a meal at the "Krua Sukho" restaurant and then participate in the "Outdoor Classroom" activities, which include rice planting, buffalo riding, duck egg collecting, visiting the organic vegetable plots, and rice milling. These activities are not only fun but also educational, especially the rice planting, which teaches children the value of food and discourages them from wasting rice.

This location offers a variety of activities, including hourly, half-day, full-day, and overnight stays at Baan Thung Na. Before leaving, don't forget to purchase premium-grade organic rice to take home. The delicious sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves served in the Bangkok Airways lounge is also sourced from here. The highlight is the black sticky rice with taro filling, available exclusively at the Sukhothai airport lounge.
