Atami: A Journey of Relaxation and Scenic Beauty
This journey began with a train ride from another city, leading me to the renowned hot spring town of Atami. The allure of Atami lies in its therapeutic onsen baths and breathtaking views. The city's charm extends to the majestic Atami Castle, a testament to its rich history.
- Travel -
Travel by train is the main mode of transportation. If you are coming from Tokyo, you can take a bus or train from Tokyo. It takes about 1-3 hours and the fare is around 1,xxx - 4,xxx depending on the train you take. You can find information on train schedules and fares from the website below.
Atami Station is served by three railway lines:
Tōkaidō Shinkansen, ( originating from the Tokyo area )
Local train
The Itō Line is a short but important line that connects to the city I visited next.
To reach other tourist attractions or hot springs from Atami Station, the most convenient option is the Yu-Yu Bus (250 yen/ride, 700 yen/day pass), which provides transportation to major tourist destinations. The bus stop is located directly in front of Atami Station. The Yu-Yu Bus schedule can be accessed on the official website of Tokai Bus.
The interior of Atami Station.
Stepping out, you'll be greeted by the modern facade of Atami Station.
The most prominent feature at the front is the free foot onsen.
After exiting Atami Station, please take the stairs on the left-hand side. This will lead you to the bus parking area.
You can see it on the map.
Let's walk to bus number 0.
After a short wait, the bus that would take us to Atami City and Atami Castle arrived. We boarded the bus and enjoyed the ride, which cost 250 yen per person and took about 30-40 minutes.
We have finally arrived at the viewpoint in front of Atami Castle.
The city view is impressive, but unfortunately, I came on a very cloudy day.

Atami Castle (Atamishiro) is a popular tourist destination in Atami City. Although referred to as a "castle," it is not a historical structure. Instead, it serves as an entertainment complex where visitors can learn about Edo and Sengoku period culture and history. From the castle ramparts and the foot-bath terrace on the first floor, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and the cityscape of Atami.
Atami Castle (熱海城, Atamijō), constructed entirely of concrete in 1959, stands as a modern marvel with no historical counterpart. Designed as a tourist attraction, it offers a captivating glimpse into the Edo and Sengoku periods, immersing visitors in the rich tapestry of Japanese culture and history. Perched atop a mountain, 100 meters above sea level, the castle commands breathtaking panoramic views of the picturesque city of Atami. Within its walls, an array of exhibits showcases the diverse architectural styles of Japanese castles, inviting visitors to step back in time and don Edo-era attire for a memorable photo opportunity. A challenging puzzle awaits those who seek an intellectual adventure, while the basement houses an impressive collection of ukiyo-e masterpieces. During the late March to early April, the castle grounds transform into a vibrant canvas of blooming cherry blossoms, culminating in a dazzling fireworks display that illuminates the night sky.

Another view of Atami Castle.
From another angle, the castle can be seen with lavender flowers about to bloom.
Let me cherish this moment before I leave.
We then waited for the train at the original stop to return to Atami Station. Opposite the train station, there is a small shopping district called Atami Nakamise, where friends can find delicious food or souvenirs before returning to Tokyo or traveling to other cities.
The shop is beautifully decorated.
This restaurant is also worth considering.
Everything looks delicious.
For those with a sweet tooth, there is also an ice cream shop.
After a long day of walking, I decided to treat myself to a free foot bath at the onsen before heading back to Atami Station.
