The Majestic Wat Phra That Suton Mongkhon Kirikhiri: A Fusion of Northern Thai and International Buddhist Architecture

For travelers traversing the scenic route between Lampang and Phrae, a majestic sight awaits: the magnificent Wat Phra That Suton Mongkhon Kirikhiri. This relatively new temple, established around 1977, stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of Buddhist architecture, drawing inspiration from prominent temples across Northern Thailand, Myanmar, China, and Laos.

Under the guidance of the revered abbot, Kru Ba Noi, the temple meticulously incorporates the architectural highlights of these diverse traditions. Completed in 1997, the temple's consecration ceremony witnessed the esteemed presence of His Royal Highness Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, representing His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX).

Nestled atop Doi Mon Thong, Wat Phra That Suton Mongkhon Kirikhiri encompasses an area of approximately 25 rai (10 acres), offering a serene sanctuary for spiritual reflection and cultural immersion. The temple's unique blend of architectural styles reflects the interconnectedness of Buddhist traditions, showcasing the shared heritage and artistic expressions of various communities.

A colossal reclining Buddha statue in Burmese style, measuring 85 meters from the top of the head to the feet, stands out with its exquisite beauty.

The Garuda pendant, also known as the "Naka Has" by the Lanna people, is crafted from beautiful brass.

The 30-cubit-tall Chedi in Chiang Saen style was originally located at Wat Phra That No (Nho) in the Sip Song Panna region, built by the father of King Mengrai the Great.

The Ubosot of Wat Phra That Suthon Mongkhon Keeli

The Ubosot of Wat Phra That Suthon Mongkhon Keeli is built in the Lanna style.

The front of the ordination hall features stucco sculptures of a sleeping giant and an awake giant guarding the entrance.

The Presiding Buddha Image of the Ubosot Hall

The presiding Buddha image of the Ubosot Hall, cast in metal, replicates the style of the Phra Phuttha Chinnarat at Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat in Phitsanulok, widely considered the most beautiful Buddha image in Thailand. The name of the Buddha image was bestowed by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, during the reign of King Rama IX.
