Cuba was my first solo trip. I flew solo, slept solo, and ate solo. But somehow, I made friends everywhere I went. The trip cost me $800, which included accommodation, all meals, unlimited drinks at the resort, and round-trip airfare from Toronto to Varadero. It was an incredible value for the price.
Our accommodation was at Villa Cuba, a resort with a variety of restaurants and nightly shows. The Republic of Cuba, officially known as Cuba, comprises the island of Cuba, the Isle of Youth, and nearby smaller islands. Located in the northern Caribbean, at the junction of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic Ocean, Cuba lies south of the eastern United States (according to Wikipedia). Its capital city is Havana. For our visit to the capital, we opted for a one-day tour from our hotel, as independent travel was not permitted. Due to being a small Asian woman (with a tan), it was crucial to stay with the tour group throughout our time in the city to avoid any potential safety concerns.
The food was bland, but the presentation was good. If you're planning a trip to Varadero, I recommend staying at the affordable 4-star Villa Cuba. They have a beautiful and clean pool, over 10 restaurants to choose from, and stunning sunset views on the beach. There was also a lovely surprise from the maid who cleaned our room every day. It was a solo trip that didn't feel like one because everyone was so welcoming and friendly. There were beach dance activities and various water sports available.
