After visiting several provinces and indulging in delicious local delicacies, I recently had the opportunity to explore the culinary delights of Chumphon. This charming province boasts an abundance of tourist attractions and, more importantly, a plethora of delectable dishes, both sweet and savory. Following my participation in the "We Do Good with Heart" mangrove planting project organized by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), I embarked on a gastronomic adventure, sampling the finest dishes from various restaurants across Chumphon. Here, I present a curated selection of signature dishes from each establishment, offering inspiration to fellow travelers planning a trip to Chumphon in the near future.
Lucky Tap Sae (Dim Sum)
This dim sum restaurant offers a wide variety of steamed dishes served hot. The dim sum has a soft and juicy texture, thanks to the perfectly steamed dough. Each basket costs only 18 baht, making it an affordable and enjoyable option. You can choose your dim sum directly from the display case in front of the restaurant or order from your table. Another recommended dish is the bak kut teh, a fragrant Chinese herbal soup with tender, fall-off-the-bone pork ribs. The service is fast, and the soup is served piping hot. Enjoy it with a bowl of steamed rice or simply as a delicious soup.
The Riverside Wooden House Restaurant
This restaurant is known for its spicy, authentic Southern Thai cuisine. Their signature dish is the stir-fried bitter shell with curry paste, served with a variety of fresh vegetables. Diners can enjoy a true taste of the region with this flavorful dish.
One reviewer noted that their group ordered multiple plates of food due to the deliciousness of the dishes, particularly the stir-fried bitter shell with curry paste. They also recommend trying the crab omelet as a side dish.
Farida Roti Shop: A Local Favorite
Farida Roti Shop is a renowned establishment known for its charcoal cheese roti, crispy roti, and volcano roti. This popular spot attracts both locals and tourists, creating a lively atmosphere where patrons can enjoy watching the skilled roti makers prepare their delicious creations.
Beyond its signature roti offerings, the shop also serves a variety of dishes, including chicken biryani and various curries, which perfectly complement the roti. This combination provides a unique and flavorful dining experience.
Breathtaking Views from Khao Maturi
Nestled atop Khao Maturi, this scenic viewpoint offers panoramic vistas that will leave you breathless. Sweeping views encompass a tranquil expanse of water and vibrant skies, while the opposite side reveals a bustling river community adorned with fishing boats. Indulge in a refreshing beverage at Tham Sing Cafe, where you can soak in the breathtaking scenery and capture picture-perfect moments to share with your friends.
Grandma's Pain Restaurant is a local restaurant with a kitchen located right in front of the shop. The chefs cook and stir the dishes in front of the customers. My favorite dishes are the salty fried pork, the banana curry with soft pork bones, and the fresh fried mackerel. There are many other delicious and famous dishes. When you eat here, you must ask for Grandma Pain. Her recipes are truly amazing. Grandma Pain is still strong and healthy. Now, she has passed on her culinary skills to her children and grandchildren, but the restaurant still maintains its original deliciousness. If you visit Chumphon, you should have a meal at Grandma's Pain Restaurant.
