Tales and New Journeys from Story From Somewhere :)
The Cloud Journey 03
This trip, we had the opportunity to join The Cloud Journey 03 and were invited as exclusive guests of Buriram United Football Club. Our goal was to explore the local craft scene, learning about the unique weaving and natural dyeing techniques that define the region.
BREATH OF BURIRAM
The craftsmanship and dedication showcased in these works are like the very breath of Buriram, reflecting the spirit and identity of its people.
Our journey began with learning how to dye fabric using 100% organic natural materials in Talong Village.
The first impression was the warm welcome from the auntie with a heartwarming smile, inviting us into her home with a friendly gesture. :)
Auntie Muang will be our teacher today.
Starting with the colors that are often dyed:
Red-orange from sappanwood / Yellow from jackfruit peel / Blue from butterfly pea flowers.
Auntie Muang began to explain and skillfully dyed the cotton for us to see.
Along with walking to pick a branch of the sappanwood tree to show us as well.
The natural dyes used in the yarn give it a unique, non-garish color tone and are free from harmful chemicals.
Auntie Muang explains that the fun of dyeing lies in the experimentation.
Experiment with new and unusual ingredients to create a wider range of colors.
We bid farewell and expressed our gratitude to everyone at Baan Talong.
We continued our journey to Ban Non Samran.
It was time to fill our stomachs and enjoy a communal lunch.
The villagers' "Phao Khao" or food offering was incredibly generous, especially the large "Dork Daeng" (silkworm pupae) dish, which seemed to be a particular favorite among everyone. :)
With renewed energy, it's time to plant mulberry trees and raise silkworms.
Aunt Suratt begins to talk about the caterpillars she raises,
explaining the size of each stage of their growth.
"They eat mulberry leaves as food,"
Auntie continues, leading us to the garden behind the house.
We try plucking mulberry leaves to feed the caterpillars in the basket.
"As they grow, they will build nests and turn yellow like this,"
Auntie Suratt continued to explain the steps involved in raising silkworms,
from boiling the cocoons and reeling the silk to obtain the fibers ready for dyeing
and weaving into various silk patterns.
Today, we learned a lot from Aunt Wan.
She showed us how silk threads are made and how they are dyed.
It takes a lot of skill and patience to make silk thread.
Aunt Wan's fabrics and the stories of the people of Buriram are truly fascinating.
We enjoyed every step of the process.
....
With the threads ready, we were ready to try weaving for the first time.
We were all very excited to try weaving for the first time in our lives.
....
We will save the story of weaving and designing the fabric for the next episode.
The blue scarf with a lightning bolt pattern is dyed in indigo blue.
The color that best represents the city of Buriram.
