I have an old trip that I haven't told anyone about yet. It's about traveling to the mountains during the rainy season and getting to sit and watch the sea of fog that I had never seen before. Today, Facebook reminded me of it, so I wanted to write down the information in case I get to go again and in case anyone is looking for a place to travel. This time of year, late early winter, is when the fog is really thick. "Khao Kho - Phu Thap Berk"

This is a map. I just checked it, and the route I used to take is now closed. If you're planning to go, make sure to plan your route carefully. I understand that the road will be completed in 2019, so you won't have to take the detour via Phu Thap Boek.

Price Update 2017.09.09

Khao Kho Post Office: Tent rental 300B, camping area 50B/person, battery charging 10B/hour.

Wat Pha Sorn Kaew === Parking fee 30B/car

A campsite at Phu Thap Boek Rim Pha costs 80 baht per person. Tent rentals are available for 500 baht per tent, or 800 baht for a complete set. A barbecue dinner costs 400 or 500 baht.

The journey began early in the morning, taking the main highway. The route from Bangkok to Phetchabun is very straightforward, but the straight road can sometimes be so comfortable that it makes you drowsy. It takes at least 4 hours to drive here for a vacation. Therefore, this time, I will be spending several days exploring the area to make the most of it. I don't know what the structure in the picture above is, but I saw it from afar and decided to stop by. It seems like it might be finished now.

This is a viewpoint near Khao Kho Post Office. Although the picture looks refreshing, it was actually very hot there. Haha.

The ascent to Khao Kho is steep in some sections. However, the rain falls in short bursts and stops quickly. It seems the clouds are close by, causing the rapid downpours. It's advisable to fill your car's fuel tank before heading up to Khao Kho, as there are no nearby gas stations. I learned this the hard way and had to drive down to the foot of the mountain to find one. Most drivers use automatic transmission vehicles, so it's recommended to use low gears and engine braking to distribute the load on the car. The incline is not as steep as Phu Thap Boek.

Upon arriving at the Khao Kho post office, I was initially confused about who the staff members were. I inquired around until I found someone who could assist me. If you bring your own tent, you can set it up first and pay later. The cost is reasonable, at 50 baht per person. Having a tent is advantageous in this way. The blue tent behind me, which I borrowed from a coworker, is mine. There were hardly any other tents nearby. However, staying in a tent at this time was not an option due to the intense heat. The sky was clear, and the temperature was scorching hot, like a copper pan. As a result, I decided to go sightseeing first.

Khao Phra Tamnak

This sentence describes a visit to Khao Phra Tamnak, a hilltop park in Pattaya, Thailand. The speaker mentions that they stopped by to take some photos and kill some time, but didn't explore the area extensively. The included image likely shows the scenery or landmarks they encountered during their brief visit.

With nowhere else to go, we returned to the campsite for dinner and enjoyed a relaxing sunset. As darkness fell, the air grew increasingly pleasant.

It was dark, so we went to sleep. But it wasn't over yet. We thought we would be able to sleep and wake up to a beautiful sea of fog, but around 3 am, it started to rain. And the conversation inside the tent was like this:

It's raining heavily, what should we do?

G: I think I was able to sleep (and then I continued sleeping - 10 minutes later, water splashed heavily into the tent).

PG : I can't take it anymore, let's go.

The tent was completely inadequate for the heavy rain. The tent pegs were almost all pulled out, and we later found out that the owner had forgotten to bring an extra tarp. We had to run back to the car to sleep. Other tents also gathered under the shelter of the house, but the rain didn't last long.

As the rain stopped, the fog rolled in, and the streetlights flickered on. It was a beautiful sight, but I decided to sleep in the car and wait for the fog to thicken in the morning.

The morning mist was light, but the air was fresh and invigorating. I didn't have any specific expectations, so I wasn't disappointed. However, I was very hungry. There was a pork skewer vendor in front, so I went to eat immediately. After a short while, I packed up my tent and continued my journey.

The wind turbine field offers stunning views, but it felt like an incomplete experience without riding the swing.

After taking photos at the wind turbine field, we will head to Wat Pha Sorn Kaew, which is not far away and only a short drive.

I'm really hungry. I need to eat first. This restaurant is behind the temple. The view is amazing. Try it, the food prices are average.

The parking lot here is moderately sized and located before the temple entrance. Parking further inside may be limited. Feel free to visit, but remember that this is a temple, so please dress appropriately. It is also important to remove your shoes before entering. You cannot stay in the temple for too long. Moving on, let's head to Pino Latte. However, before we go, let me tell you that the view from the parking lot is amazing.

This is a great view of the parking lot.

The journey to this location was not enjoyable due to my own carelessness. I crashed into the guardrail, causing significant damage. The front skirt of my car was sacrificed in the process. Regarding the cafe itself, access requires driving through a one-way road followed by a steep climb. Please exercise caution. Coffee prices are relatively high. If you appreciate scenic views and a stylish cafe, this might be worth the trip.

This is a rest stop on the way up to Phu Thap Boek. It is very steep and has many turns. Fortunately, it was not raining when I drove up.

The journey to Rai Rim Pha was short, but finding it was challenging. GPS coordinates were inaccurate, requiring a left turn at the topmost restaurant followed by a straight drive and a final right turn to reach the parking area. An adjacent property offered similar camping facilities, but belonged to a different owner. Similar to other campsites, payment was collected after setting up the tent. The picture above showcases our upgraded tent, thanks to the assistance of our friendly neighbors from Saraburi. We are incredibly grateful for the kindness of fellow travelers.

Do you see the dawn?

At the edge of the cliff, perhaps?

Another thing, there are also bungalows available for rent here, probably around 2500 baht. If you want to eat "moo kratha" (Thai BBQ), you can walk to order and they will bring it to your tent. However, the food prices here are higher than usual, so it's a good idea to bring your own food. Be prepared for rain, but in the end, there was no rain, so we slept soundly all night. We will see plenty of fog tomorrow morning.

While visiting mountains, encountering thick fog like this every time is unlikely. The occurrence of such fog depends on several factors, including suitable weather conditions and wind patterns. Based on my experience, the main factors influencing fog formation are recent rainfall, calm winds, and appropriate temperatures. Even if the fog is initially thick, strong winds can quickly dissipate it. I hope everyone has the good fortune to experience such fog during their travels.
