Many people have visited Yangon, and there are many recommended restaurants for backpackers like us. However, one of the most memorable restaurants for us is the GOLDEN DUCK RESTAURANT.

GOLDEN DUCK RESTAURANT: A Burmese Culinary Experience

The GOLDEN DUCK RESTAURANT, a traditional Burmese eatery housed in a two-story shophouse adjacent to a Yangon shrine, offers a glimpse into authentic Burmese cuisine. Upon entering, patrons are greeted warmly by the waitstaff in the local language, presenting a potential language barrier for non-Burmese speakers. The extensive menu, filled with unfamiliar dishes, can be daunting, leaving diners wondering if they will make the right choices.

No need to overthink it. We came to a roast duck restaurant, so we must eat roast duck. However, the roast duck is sold whole or in halves. If we order a half duck and other dishes, we might end up overeating. Therefore, a half duck was served with two dipping sauces.

To avoid feeling lonely, I ordered a small plate of stir-fried noodles. The roasted duck, with its crispy skin and tender, juicy meat, was well worth the solo trip to the restaurant. The slightly burnt aroma added a touch of sweetness, and the accompanying dipping sauces, initially mistaken for fish sauce with chilies, turned out to be a savory (dark-colored) sauce and a sweet sauce (sprinkled with vegetables). These sauces complemented the duck perfectly, but chili sauce was also available upon request, catering to individual preferences.
