Sri Thep Historical Park: A Glimpse into Ancient Thailand
The Sri Thep Historical Park stands as a testament to the rich history of Phetchabun Province. Encompassing the ancient city of Si Thep, the park offers a captivating glimpse into Thailand's past. Originally known as "Mueang Aphai Sali," the city was rediscovered by Prince Damrong Rajanubhab during his inspection of the Phetchabun region in 1874-1875. He bestowed upon it the new name "Si Thep," meaning "City of Angels."
Si Thep's strategic location at a crossroads facilitated connections with other regions, leading to a unique blend of cultural influences. The city's architecture and artifacts reflect the artistic traditions of Dvaravati and Khmer civilizations. Its construction during the powerful Khmer era, estimated to be over 1,000 years ago, is evident in its architectural and artistic features. These elements showcase the city's sophisticated development, particularly in the 11th to 16th centuries.
The park's archaeological treasures offer a window into the lives of the people who once inhabited Si Thep. The intricate carvings, sculptures, and structures reveal a society with a deep appreciation for art and craftsmanship. The park serves as a vital link to Thailand's past, providing valuable insights into the region's cultural and historical significance.
Sri Thep Historical Park was awarded two Thailand Tourism Awards in 2000: Best Ancient Cultural Tourist Site and Outstanding Internet Public Relations Media.
