Yaung Siam Restaurant

Seeking respite from the scorching midday heat in the bustling Bang Lamphu district, I ventured away from the crowded shops lining Phra Sumen Road. Avoiding the lunchtime throngs, I meandered towards the serene backstreets behind the Bangkokian Museum and Wat Sangwet Wichayaram, passing the exquisite Duangrit Benjarong House. Initially, I had planned to indulge in Sukhothai noodles nearby.

Halfway through the walk, I spotted a charming little shop with a delightful paint job. Naturally, it was air-conditioned, so I decided to stop in for a visit. I had never been there before. The shop, aptly named "Yung Siam Thai Cuisine," was adorned in a cheerful yellow and white color scheme. The storefront featured small glass panes with tinted film, adding a touch of elegance.

Stepping into the restaurant, a wave of cool air from the air conditioner washed over me, making me feel instantly refreshed. The thought of venturing out to find a noodle shop suddenly seemed unappealing. Instead, we decided to have lunch right there. We asked the waiter for a menu and were presented with a variety of tempting dishes. However, as it was a busy lunchtime, we knew we wouldn't have much time to linger over a leisurely meal. We opted for the waiter's recommendations and ordered those.

The table is beautifully decorated with Louis-style furniture.

Stir-fried Rice with River Prawns, Garlic, and Pepper

Today's recommended menu is the stir-fried river prawns with garlic and pepper. This dish is not usually on the menu, but today we have a good supply of prawns, so it is the recommended menu.

This plate of stir-fried rice with river prawns, garlic, and pepper features fresh, medium-sized river prawns that are fried until the shells are crispy and edible. The prawns are coated in a garlic sauce and served with rice fried with shrimp roe and egg. The highlight of the dish is the accompanying seafood dipping sauce, which enhances the sweetness of the river prawns. The sour, salty, and spicy flavors of the sauce add an unforgettable dimension to the dish.

Stir-fried noodles

The next dish, which needs no introduction as it's already on the menu, is the stir-fried chicken noodles. The soft rice noodles are stir-fried with a fragrant aroma of the wok, resulting in a well-balanced flavor. Just add pepper and it's delicious without any additional seasoning. But if you like it spicy, feel free to add more. The crispy squid with its delicious flavor adds a delightful crunch to every bite, making the dish even more enjoyable. The sweet and savory taste of the egg, stir-fried together in the same dish, provides the perfect balance. This dish is definitely the best.

Unsure of the portion sizes, we opted for a comforting hot soup and ordered tom yum goong. To our surprise, it arrived in a large brass pan, the fragrant aroma of spices and curry paste filling the air. The rich, creamy coconut milk balanced perfectly with the fiery heat of the chilies, creating a symphony of sour, salty, spicy, and sweet flavors. We couldn't resist indulging in the flavorful broth, savoring every sip.

The original text is in Thai, and I have translated it into English as follows:

"We intended to sit for a short while and then leave, but we ended up enjoying the soup and the air conditioning comfortably. Before we paid the bill, we knew we would have to come back again. The restaurant, "Yung Siam Thai Cuisine," is located in Soi Samsen 1 next to Wat Sangwet. It's not difficult to find. Try it out!"
