Mount Bromo, Indonesia

Mount Bromo is an active volcano in Indonesia. Smoke constantly billows from its crater, accompanied by a rumbling sound. The name "Bromo" derives from the Javanese spelling of "Brahma," the Hindu god of creation.

The Uniqueness of the Landscape

This area is characterized by its unique surroundings, featuring extinct volcanoes, black sand formed from volcanic ash, and a vast natural landscape that makes you feel渺小如蚁.

The village, nestled on a picturesque hillside, is home to residents who hold Mount Bromo in high esteem. Their reverence is understandable, as the volcano's grandeur and awe-inspiring presence are undeniable.

We traveled in November, which is the rainy season here.
When we arrived at this small village, it was raining, creating a thick, beautiful fog. The weather was quite cold.

We strolled around the area near our accommodation, the cold forcing us to buy gloves from local vendors. The atmosphere seemed peaceful, perhaps due to the rain keeping people indoors. The chilly weather made the prospect of sleep quite appealing.

However, despite the sleep-inducing atmosphere, we decided to brave the rain and head to the mountaintop to witness the sunset. Our guide informed us that if we were lucky, we might even catch a glimpse of Mount Bromo.

Above, there is a small shop where our guide asked to be treated to instant noodles. He said it was very delicious. We both tried it and were surprised by how good it was. It was completely different from the instant noodles we have back home, and it even had meat in it. We ate and took photos at the same time. The instant noodles here produce a lot of smoke.

We were incredibly excited because we had seen pictures of Bromo on social media beforehand. As soon as we saw them, we decided that we had to visit. Now, we are finally here and we can see it with our own eyes.
It's truly awe-inspiring. The sound of the erupting volcano is constantly present, even though the sky is overcast today. We are still very impressed. We've finally met you, Bromo.

We soon returned to our accommodation, showered, and went to bed early, saving our energy for the next day. We had to leave at 4:00 AM to reach another viewpoint. Before going to sleep, we prayed for clear skies and beautiful fog.

We set off in the early morning darkness. We didn't take many photos because we could barely see the scenery passing by. We only knew that many other people were traveling with us.

Today, we traveled in a cute red jeep. The driver must have been very skilled because the road was quite winding.

As the sky began to clear and the sunlight started to shine through, our guide exclaimed, "We are lucky!" He explained that it is a rare occurrence for the sky to be clear and the fog to be so beautiful. We felt that Bromo was being kind to us, perhaps because we were so determined to see it.

Translated: It's like being on another planet. Indonesia is located in the Ring of Fire, which means it has many volcanoes, both dormant and active. The extinct ones are covered in lush vegetation, as seen next to Bromo, which is Mount Batok. The stunning views are a testament to nature's ability to create such wonders.

Do you see the volcano in the distance? That is Mount Semeru, the highest volcano in Indonesia. It has erupted countless times, most recently just one day after we returned from Bali, coinciding with the eruption of Mount Agung. We were incredibly lucky.

The surrounding area is filled with dry trees. Do you see the black soil? That is the result of ash, dust, and volcanic smoke.

The guide asked if we wanted to see a beautiful, secluded spot with few people. We immediately agreed, and the guide led us up above the viewpoint. It was truly stunning. We loved it. The guide was kind and didn't rush us, as we enjoy taking photos. This allowed us to spend a considerable amount of time there, soaking in the beautiful view and feeling relaxed.

Every scene here looks like a movie scene. Whether we use a professional camera or just a mobile phone, the photos are stunning. Don't worry about not having a big camera to take beautiful photos.

We move a little closer to Bromo. When we get down, we will see that there are horses waiting to serve us.

Undeterred by the considerable distance from the parking lot to the crater rim, we opted for a horseback ride, which was included in our tour package. As we rode, enjoying the scenic views, we felt reassured by the presence of guides who led our horses.

As dawn breaks, the sand on both sides of the road begins to emit wisps of smoke, a phenomenon known as "Whispering Sand" or "Singing Sand."

We soon approached the foot of the volcano. The terrain was rough, but our horse skillfully navigated us to the top. What a capable animal!

This area will be our chariot stop. Remember where our horses are, or you'll have to walk back.

From this vantage point, one can observe a multitude of horses. Mount Bromo serves as a source of livelihood for the local community. Some individuals operate jeepneys, while others engage in the sale of goods or lead horses for hire.

We can imagine that if we were here, close to nature, it would be a good life.

Before the ascent, there is a point where offerings are placed for worship. In this area, villagers sell dried flowers to be thrown into the crater above. Every December, there is the Yadnya Kasada festival, which involves a ceremony of offering sacrifices to the gods by throwing food, flowers, and sacrificial animals into the volcanic crater.

After climbing approximately 200 meters, we reached the summit of the volcano. Atop the peak, an altar dedicated to the worship of Lord Ganesha stood majestically. We paid our respects and proceeded to walk around the crater's rim.

Below, the ground is erupting with a deafening roar, spewing out endless plumes of white smoke. It's truly hair-raising, a sight of immense power. This must be the breath of the gods that they speak of.

We cautiously walked around the rim of the volcanic crater. The black sand surface was slippery and narrow, making it easy to lose our footing. If we slipped, it would be a difficult choice which side to fall on.

This trip truly made us feel as small as ants. We admire those who can walk around the entire crater rim, as it is both high and slippery, with strong winds to contend with.

Our journey was short, punctuated by photo stops, and it was time to bid farewell to Bromo.

An extinct volcano, Mount Bromo.

The view from the top before descending offers a panoramic vista of the surrounding mountains. The scenery is truly breathtaking.

We are now back in our jeep and heading to our next destination.

Not far from here, we will find a green grassy area, or what is known as the savanna. There is also a small noodle cart, so try it out, the taste is delicious. The grassland here is a very large area.

We stopped to take a photo together. This photo was taken by our guide before he took us to the Whispering Sand Dunes.

We have arrived at the Whispering Desert. The vast expanse is covered in black sand and overlooked by a towering mountain. Wisps of white smoke rise from the sand, as if the desert itself is whispering secrets to us.

We were right to choose Bromo, Indonesia, for our first trip abroad. Thank you to the guide who took us on a safe journey, gave us advice, and was very friendly. We really have to say goodbye to Bromo now. As I said, this trip has opened our eyes to the world. It has made us realize that there are so many things in the world that we have never seen or experienced.

If you're still unsure about visiting Mount Bromo, check out our review and give it a try. Then come back and tell us what you think of the sound of the gods' breath.
