The Evolution of the Emerald Buddha Temple's Spire

The Emerald Buddha Temple's spire, originally constructed during the Ayutthaya period, stood at a modest height of 8 wa, approximately 16 meters. During the reign of King Rama III, the spire underwent significant renovations, increasing its height to an impressive 81.85 meters from base to peak. This restoration also included the embellishment of the prang with colored glazed glass.

The legend of the giants of Wat Jaeng and Wat Pho, who guard the Yod Mongkut Gate at Wat Arun, tells of two giants, Sahatsakdecha, with a white body, and Thosakan, with a green body, who hold clubs in their hands. According to the legend, the giant of Wat Pho fought with the giant of Wat Jaeng, and their fight destroyed the surrounding area, which is why the area is now called Tha Tian.

By sea

• You can take a boat to Tha Tien Pier, and then take a cross-river ferry from Phra Nakhon side to Wat Arun Pier, or take a Chao Phraya Express Boat to Wat Arun Pier.

• Exit at Saphan Taksin Station (S6) on the Silom Line. Use Exit 2 and take the Chao Phraya Express Boat at Sathorn Pier to Tha Tien Pier (N.8). Then, take a cross-river ferry from Tha Tien Pier to Wat Arun.

By car

From Pin Klao Road, turn onto Arun Amarin Road, passing Siriraj Hospital. Continue straight ahead to the Royal Thai Navy Dockyard. The entrance to Wat Arun will be on your left.
