#Norway Trip Review: Self-guided 5 Days 4 Nights
Road Trip chasing Northern Lights, exploring fishing villages with spectacular snowy fjord views
For this Norway trip, we chose 2 main destinations: Tromsø city and Senja island
📍 Tromsø City
Can be called the main city for Northern Lights hunting - you can even see the Aurora from the city center.
Recommend taking the Fjellheisen cable car up to see panoramic views of the city and fjords.
📍 Senja Island
Just a few hours from Tromsø, this island is famous for its mountain and fjord views that look like paintings. The "National Tourist Route Senja" driving route is one of the most beautiful roads in the world. Perfect for nature lovers who want to experience peaceful atmosphere and unique scenery unlike anywhere else.

Let's start with Tromsø, the main city for Northern Lights hunting. To get to Tromsø, we can take a domestic flight from Oslo, which takes only 1 hour and 50 minutes.
For this trip, we rented a car for self-driving.
Our first destination was heading to Sommarøy village, a small fishing village located in the Tromsø municipality, Norway. It's known as the "Land of the Midnight Sun" and is a perfect destination for those wanting to experience Norway's beautiful nature in a peaceful atmosphere.
We stayed at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel Tromsø AS.
On our first night, we were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights right from our hotel room balcony!
Right from day one, we got a spectacular view of the Northern Lights, so we drove around the village to chase more Aurora views.
On morning of Day 3, we planned to visit Senja Island.
Fjordgård is a small fishing village on Senja Island in northern Norway, surrounded by mountains and fjords. Besides being a popular spot for viewing the Northern Lights, during winter it's covered in pure white snow, like a village from a Christmas tale (with only 4 hours of daylight). The atmosphere is incredibly peaceful and romantic (really quiet - on the day I visited, we barely saw anyone, haha).
Travel directions (for self-drive):
From our accommodation in Sommarøy, drive to Brensholmen ferry terminal (about 1 hour from Tromsø), then take the ferry to Botnhamn port on Senja Island. The ferry crossing takes approximately 45 minutes.
From Senja Island, we returned to Tromsø city to check in at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Tromsø.
Day 4 of our trip, we explored Tromsø city.
While walking around the city, we came across Tromsø Cathedral, which is Norway's largest wooden church.
This yellow church is a landmark that tourists shouldn't miss.
During daytime, even with just a few hours of light, we managed to fully experience the beauty of this city.
When visiting Tromsø, you absolutely can't miss the Fjellheisen!
This cable car takes you up to the viewing point on Storsteinen mountain at 421 meters above sea level. From here, you'll experience panoramic views of Tromsø city, beautiful fjords, and snow-covered mountains just like this. The views are amazing.
Before ending our Norway trip, the Northern Lights made another appearance right in downtown Tromsø. Coming here truly doesn't disappoint!
