Besides the wonderful atmosphere of the city that makes us want to keep coming back, one of Copenhagen's standout features that makes us return multiple times - we have to say it's because of the convenient airport that's so close to the city. You can take a direct train in less than 20 minutes, and there are direct flights with Thai Airways at really great times.

The flight times are at night, direct flights where you sleep long and comfortably, arriving in the morning so you can continue sightseeing right away. For us, it's incredibly worthwhile. The service staff are lovely every time, especially on the return flight - just boarding the plane feels warm like being home already. Truly premium full service.

It's generally a cashless society that accepts cards for almost everything, even at Christmas markets, except when boarding buses where you need to prepare exact change.

We've categorized the attractions by theme, so you can pin the ones you like and plan your trip from 2-3 days up to a whole week.

Landmark Attractions Category

Nyhavn This is a major tourist attraction, and when we search for images of Copenhagen, pictures of this place come up first. The word "Nyhavn" means "New Harbour," which is a harbor that King Frederik ordered to be built near the city. Today, it has become a tourist destination filled with restaurants along the way, and there are also preserved ships to see.

Rosenborg Castle

This palace is a Renaissance-style city palace built since the early 1600s as a summer palace. Inside, it displays various belongings, utensils, and artworks, with the highlight being the royal crown. Denmark still has a royal family as the head of state.

Frederik's Church

This is a church with the largest dome in Scandinavia, also known as Marble Church. It's located quite centrally in the city, so I think anyone visiting would likely walk past it.

When we went, there was a band performing there too.

Amalienborg

This is the official residence of the Danish royal family. The square we see here is surrounded by 4 palaces. The highlight that tourists often come to see is the changing of the guard.

The Little Mermaid

I have to say beforehand that many people come here and are disappointed because the statue isn't very large and you have to travel a bit away from the city center. But for me, I understand it, because the author of The Little Mermaid, Hans Christian Andersen, is considered an important figure in Denmark, and the statue sitting on the rocks by the sea is beautifully and appropriately done.

Christiansborg

Another palace that you can visit. This palace is different from the previous two because it's a government office building housing the Prime Minister's office, Parliament, and Supreme Court.

SMK - Statens Museum for Kunst  Or The National Gallery of Denmark, the national art gallery. The highlight here is works by Henri Matisse, and there are many works from across Europe dating back to the 14th century, with quite a lot of Netherlandish Renaissance style works, up to modern and contemporary eras.

NY Carlsberg Glyptotek

Another highlight museum of Copenhagen. This museum displays private collections focusing on sculpture work from ancient Greek and Roman times up to Impressionist art. There's a beautiful garden in the middle. It's another museum where both the exhibits are interesting and the museum building itself is very beautiful.

Districts and Streets for Walking

Nyboder Neighborhood The Nyboder district stands out for its row of buildings that used to be naval officers' homes. Now it's famous for its bright, lovely house colors. Many people come here to walk around and take photos. There are restaurants and shops too. Additionally, this district became even more famous from the filming of the movie "The Danish Girl."

Kongen Nytorv

Kongens Nytorv square is a city center square. On one side is the Opera House, while the other side leads to the pedestrian street that's the city's main shopping street. When we came in December, there was also a Christmas market.

Strøget Street

The main pedestrian street in the city center with shops all along the way. This is the most bustling area. Anyone into shopping, this is the street for you. This street passes through many squares, such as the central square where the Stork Fountain is located.

Freetown Christania

It's exactly what the name says - a freetown. The Christania area is a hippie district that wants to govern itself, a small zone where you can freely buy and sell cannabis, and it has a very high hippie vibe. Today it has become a tourist attraction, but you can still see people selling and using. Inside there's lots of graffiti, a skating area - it's a zone unlike anywhere else in Copenhagen and feels like stepping into another world.

The Black Square

Actually, you can stay here all day. It's part of Superkilen Park, a public park built in the Norrebro district - same name as the station. This public park is really well-designed public space with exercise areas, skating areas, green gardens for sitting and relaxing, dog walking. On the other side, there's Red Square with local cafés and shops.

Café Category

Coffee Collective Coffee Collective has branches all over the city - wherever you're near, go there. In the photo, we visited the Torvehallerne branch, which is like a market hall where you can find breakfast. It's also close to the subway station.

At Coffee Collective, they have both coffee blends which are easy to order and drink, and specialty coffee from various sources. But I have to say that the overall tone of coffee in this area tends to be high acidity.

Det Vide Hus

This is a neighborhood café style coffee shop with specialty coffee from various sources and several famous roasters in Copenhagen. It's located right across from the Botanical Garden and the palace. This shop is small but really packed with people. Even though it's crowded, it has a truly warm, hygge atmosphere.

Illum Rooftop

The top floor of Illum department store has cafés, bars, and restaurants. Each establishment has a balcony area with views of the outside - another spot not to be missed.

The Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden is Denmark's largest plant collection and part of the Natural History Museum. The area includes outdoor gardens where we can walk around and sit and chill, but the highlight for Western tourists is the glass house in the center which requires an entrance fee, called the Palm House. It's temperature-controlled with tropical plants arranged like a tropical rainforest, which they don't have naturally there, but it's beautifully arranged. The surrounding area has over 600 species of Denmark's native plants.

Tivoli Garden

An amusement park in the city center, located right next to Copenhagen's central train station. Tickets here come in two types: one that doesn't include rides where you buy ride tickets separately for each ride (you can tap your credit card at each ride), and another type that includes all rides.

bl78myx2fxn7

Actually, not including the rides, what's great is that some days when we go and the ride queues are really long, we don't feel bad about not getting to ride. Or if there's a ride we really want to try, we just join the queue and tap our card to pay for just the ones we want to ride.

va7u49ehfznx

There are lots of interesting rides including roller coasters, haunted houses, drop rides, various carousels - this place is very classic. And they decorate differently for each season, with Halloween themes, and for those who come during Christmas, it's absolutely adorable!
