Ayutthaya Travel Guide by Tiewnaideena : The 9 temples

Ayutthaya is not that far from Bangkok only an hour drive. Many people spend a day to visit the 9 temples at Ayutthaya, For us, it would take longer than that because as we spend more time on each temple. We only can make to 3 - 4 temples in a day. So all photos in this review have been taken from different date.

1. Wat Phrasrisanpet

Wat Phrasrisanpet has no monks, it used to be a place for Buddha activities and keep the ashes of the King. After losing the war, the temple was burnt and gold was taken so King Rama 1 ordered to move the ashes to keep at Wat Phrachatupon (Wat Pho).

Highlight is 3 white pagodas that is located next to each other. It is so beautiful and shady.

2. Wat Mahathat

Wat Mahathat is the highlight of Ayutthaya where the most tourists come to visit.

In the past, this temple is the center of religious of Ayutthaya. It is the place that Phraborrommathat Klang Muang is located and where the Supreme Patriarch of Kamwasi Side is staying. So the temple has a good care and renovate all the time. Then after losing the war, the temple was burnt since then the temple become abandoned temple.

Highlight is the head of Buddha image in the tree (where every one comes to take a photo)

3. Wat Thammikarat

From the history, it said that the temple was built by Phraya Thammikarat so they assumed that the temple was built before established Ayutthaya. It was named as Wat Mukkarat then changed to the name of the builder.

Highlight is the 52 lion statues that are located around the pagodas. Some of them were destroyed but some of them are still in complete form. There are monks live in the temple.

4. Wat Nah Phramen

Wat Nah Phramen is an important temple in the history because it is the only temple that was not destroyed after the war with Myanmar as it was the place that Myanmar used as the army base. So everything in the temple is in its original form especially Buddha Image.

Highlight is Ayutthaya Buddha Image with original accessories and those trees that grow up above the pagoda.

5. Wat Phukhaothong

Wat Phukhaothong is an ancient temple of Ayutthaya in Mon architecture. As after Phrajao Burengnong wined the war with Ayutthaya, he built a big pagoda in the temple. Then in Phrajao Borrommagot era, they had renovated the pagoda so the base of the pagoda is still in Mon style but the top of pagoda changed to Ayutthaya style.

6. Wat Yai Chaimongkol

This is another famous temple that people like to go because of a long history and the distinctive architecture. Moreover, there is the biggest pagoda located here.

Highlight is the biggest pagoda and the Buddha image at the balcony

7. Wat Ratburana

Wat Ratburana is located to the North of Wat Mahathat.

According to historical anecdote of Ayutthaya, Borommarachathirat II built the temple and use it as the place for his brothers funeral. Wat Ratburana was the royal monastery during Ayutthaya Period.

Highlight is this temple used to be treasure trove such as swords, crowns, gold, etc.

8. Wat Chaiwatthanaram

Wat Chaiwatthanaram is another temple that we always come to visit every time that we go to Ayutthaya. The temple is located beside Chaophraya River and the architecture of the temple is different from other temple in Ayutthaya which is also very beautiful.
