Spicy Rice Cake

Seafood Tokpokki with fresh, smooth Sleepy Bear for only 299 baht

Many people may know TOKPOKKI, Korean hot pot, or Korean instant noodles, whatever you call it. But if you want to call it correctly, it's Tokpokki JIP. This restaurant is located in 9:53 Art Mall in the heart of the city, in Thonglor Soi 9. Just keep going straight on Thonglor Road and look for Thonglor Soi 9. Once you turn into Thonglor Soi 9, drive straight ahead until the end of the road. The mall will be on your left hand side. It's called 9:53 Art Mall, which is the intersection of Thonglor Soi 9 and Sukhumvit Soi 53.

The shop is located on the ground floor, right in the middle. There is a prominent sign with the shop's name. The shop is small, about the size of a single-story building. The front of the shop is quite narrow. When you enter, there is a bar counter on the left-hand side, and then a narrow path leading into the shop. The shop can accommodate about 30 guests. The kitchen is located at the back of the shop.

The main menu of this restaurant is Tokpokki, which is available in 3 options: 1. Original Tokpokki, 2. Budae Tokpokki, and 3. Seafood Tokpokki. I chose the Seafood Tokpokki for 1-2 people (420 baht). The pot contains shrimp, squid, mussels, ramen noodles, glass noodles, napa cabbage, fish cakes, and the special sauce used to make the soup, which is the restaurant's secret recipe. This sauce is different for each restaurant, depending on the establishment. Initially, I mistakenly thought that they only used gochujang. The soup's spiciness is available in 5 levels. I chose the regular level, which is level two. Even at this level, there is some spiciness. If you choose level three or higher, I think the spiciness will overpower the flavor of the soup. All the main ingredients here are imported from Korea, except for the fresh food.

Once the pot is set, turn on the stove and wait for it to boil. Once the noodles are cooked and tender, the other fresh ingredients should be cooked as well. The broth and sauce mixture is already quite strong in flavor, so I would recommend turning off the stove once the fresh ingredients are cooked. If you leave it on for too long, it will become salty. Unless you order additional toppings, you can add more broth and turn on the stove again. (Toppings include cheese, Tok eggs, pork, beef, and various noodles, priced from 40-80 baht.)

The menu that comes with this price is Heinaken Draught Ice Beer Topping with Honey (140 baht), which is 1/2 Pint. In addition to using draft beer, the special feature is the cream that is topped on the front. This cream is actually made with draft beer in a Slush machine that is much colder than regular Slush machines. This is because beer has a lower freezing point than normal, so the machine has to use a special imported machine. The advantage of this glass is that it uses the coldness of the beer cream instead of ice, so the beer does not lose its flavor. I ordered it with honey, which was squeezed on top of the cold beer cream, adding another layer of smoothness. The bitterness at the end of the tongue cuts through the sweet honey, and then you sip the cold beer, which is another refreshing experience. This glass can be called anything you want. As far as I've heard, people call it Ice Beer, Ice Cream Beer, or even Slush Beer. This glass is very popular in Korea and Japan.

These two items were obtained from a "Groupon" voucher. The regular price is 560 baht, but I only paid 299 baht.

[CR] I also wanted to try other recommended dishes from the restaurant, so I ordered Dak Gang Jeong fried chicken (120 baht). It's chicken marinated in Dak Gang Jeong sauce, then deep-fried and coated with white sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, and peanuts. The chicken is made with chicken breast. The feeling is crispy on the outside and the meat inside is very tender. The sauce is a bit sour and sweet. It's delicious with beer! 5555

The other glass is Yuja Granita (130 baht). The shop uses Yuja oranges, or Japanese Yuzu, which are soaked in honey first. They are left to mature and then blended with the oranges, with the orange peel added afterwards. The taste is therefore sweet, fragrant and slightly bitter. This glass is not as sweet as a typical smoothie. It's refreshing and different.

Overall, the Tokpokki menu is delicious. But the highlights are the Dak Gang Jeong chicken and the beer. Importantly, this restaurant does not use MSG.
