I'm one of those people who, when I see someone traveling alone, I think, "Wow, how brave!" Some of them are just little girls, but they're out there exploring the wilderness, and it makes me feel ashamed. I would never dare to travel like that.

Until a couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to travel alone. It wasn't because I was feeling artsy or anything, but my friend bailed on me, and I didn't want to waste the plane ticket, so I decided to go on the trip by myself.

That trip made me grow and learn a lot. Traveling alone wasn't as scary as I thought. On the contrary, the experience taught me so much that I'm now hooked on solo travel.

And here are 8 reasons why you should travel alone at least once in your life.

1. To practice planning

When traveling with friends, we usually let them plan everything, and we just go with the flow.

Traveling alone means no one is there to plan for you. We have to design every aspect of the trip, from researching tourist attractions, preparing leave days, booking flights and accommodation, designing itineraries, etc. Therefore, we are forced to plan, which is a good exercise in planning.

2. Solved immediate problems

Despite meticulous planning and preparation, it is inevitable that some things will not go according to plan.

Unexpected encounters are a training ground for on-the-spot problem-solving, requiring you to weigh different options and make decisions independently.

No one is going with me, right?

3. Language practice

When traveling abroad with friends, sometimes when we need to talk to foreigners, we might just say "Hi, this is my friend" and let our friend speak English.

When traveling alone, there's no one to help, so I have to use the knowledge I learned from my niece, Natcha, Bob's daughter. But the good thing is that it forces me to practice the language. Sometimes it's not just English, but I might also get to practice sign language and body language communication as well.

4. Practice negotiation

Traveling to a developed country is great, but if not, we might have to deal with all sorts of tricks from the locals. Just like foreigners get scammed in Thailand, we can get scammed when we go abroad. Traveling alone will make us more aware of people, practice negotiation skills, and we won't be easily fooled anymore.

5. Enjoy independent travel

The advantage of traveling solo is that you have high flexibility. You don't have to wait for anyone to eat, wait for anyone to go to the bathroom, wait for anyone to shop, wait for anyone to wake up late. You can wake up whenever you want, go wherever you want, sit wherever you want, eat whatever you want. Life is very happy, you can do whatever you want.

6. I have learned to live alone.

Traveling alone gives us time to be with ourselves, to think quietly, and to understand ourselves.

Perhaps we might find some answers we've been searching for for a long time.

7. Overcoming fear

Traveling to a place we don't know, where no one knows us, and encountering unfamiliar surroundings can make us feel scared.

It's okay to be scared, but try to overcome your fear. You'll find that solo travel isn't as scary as you think.

8. And you might meet someone new.

Maybe someone is on their way to find you too ^^

Pack your bags and let's go!
