We've finally arrived at our fourth travel review! This time, we're exploring the misty mountains of Khao Kho and Phu Tubberk on a trip aptly named "Curly Hair in the City of Mist."

Yes, the name is a bit peculiar, but it was bestowed upon us by a friend who couldn't resist comparing our curly hair to…a pot scrubber! 😜

Anyway, back to the trip! We embarked on this adventure during the tail end of the rainy season, when the weather was pleasantly cool, neither too hot nor too cold. It was like standing on a mountaintop, feeling the refreshing breeze!

**[Day 0] November 5, 2016**

**4:30 PM.** Our Facebook chat popped up with a message: "Hey, wanna go to Khao Kho?" "Let's go tonight, arrive there tomorrow morning, and stay there for a night." I could only reply with... "I'm in! Count me in!" Why am I so easily persuaded? Haha. And so, that's how this trip came about. A spontaneous trip, an unplanned trip, a trip with no accommodation booked, no itinerary, just a desire to change our sleeping environment and see the sea of mist! Haha. After that, we started packing our bags and preparing to embark on our journey to soak in the atmosphere of the sea of mist.

00:00: Our journey began with a meeting point in Khon Kaen, as usual. After filling up the car, using the restroom, and grabbing some snacks, we finally hit the road at 1:00 AM. My primary responsibility for this trip was to… sleep! Yes, sleep soundly while my friend took over the driving duties.


3:00 AM. We woke up to the car stopping. Where are we? We picked up our phones and saw... Loei! We drove from Khon Kaen to Loei in 2 hours! My God! **[Day 1] November 6, 2016**

4:00 AM. We arrived at the Khao Kho Post Office, a scenic spot with stunning views of the mist-covered sea. It also serves as a camping ground for those who want to experience the cool air and wake up to the breathtaking view. However, we arrived too early for the mist! Everything was quiet, and people were still asleep. We decided to take a nap while waiting for the mist to appear.

5:30 AM. The sky began to brighten, so we woke up our friends to watch the sea of mist. We could see the white sea of mist as far as the eye could see.... After enjoying the sea of mist, we started to feel hungry! So we went out to have breakfast at the shops in front of the post office. We also took a shower and changed clothes here... The sea of mist was free! The accommodation was free! And now we even got a free shower! 5555

At 9:00 AM, we continued our journey. Our plan for the day was to explore Khao Kho and then drive up to Phu Thap Boek in the evening. However, as it turned out, this was just a plan! 55555 The next destination on our itinerary was the Khao Kho Royal Palace. It was here that we witnessed our friend's driving skills... hmm, no wonder it took us two hours to get from Khon Kaen to Lom Sak. We continued driving along the road, following the signs to avoid getting lost. In less than an hour, we arrived at the Khao Kho Royal Palace, where we were only allowed to take pictures from outside as it was closed to the public.

This royal residence on Khao Kho was built in 1984 due to the prevalence of communist insurgency in the area. After the suppression of the insurgency, the military constructed the residence as a temporary lodging for the King during his visits to the region. Since we were unable to enter the residence, we took pictures of the surroundings. The atmosphere outside was incredibly pleasant, with a cool and refreshing breeze.

11:00 AM: Embarking on a Historical Journey

Our journey commenced at 11:00 AM, as we set off towards the Itthi Support Firing Base, situated near the Khao Kho Royal Palace. The 30-minute drive brought us to this fascinating museum, showcasing the weaponry employed by the government during their struggle against the Communist Party in 1968. This immersive experience transformed our trip into a captivating historical exploration, enriching our knowledge while we explored.

By 11:30 AM, we were starting to feel hungry and tired, so we drove down from Khao Kho to have lunch at "Krua Khao Kho", which is located near the intersection leading to Khao Kho. This restaurant is quite famous! Now, you might be wondering why we didn't visit the Monument of Self-Sacrifice, even though it's on the same route. The answer is that we didn't stop; we just drove past it because everyone in the car was starting to get cranky from hunger. 5555 Due to everyone's hunger pangs, we weren't able to take pictures of the food in time. 5555 But this restaurant serves delicious food at reasonable prices. We highly recommend it! If you're ever in Khao Kho, don't forget to stop by for a meal.


**1:00 PM.** After a hearty lunch, we set off for Wat Phra That Pha Sorn Kaew, a temple renowned for its white Buddha statues stacked upon one another and its reliquary adorned with Benjarong porcelain. The drive from Khao Kho Kitchen was short, and soon we arrived at the temple. However, the sight that greeted us was a sea of people. Overwhelmed by the crowd, we decided to pay our respects at the large white Buddha statue and take some photos around the temple grounds. The sheer number of visitors made it impossible to jostle our way up to the reliquary for a panoramic view. Oh well!

Our next stop was a well-deserved break after capturing the scenic views around the temple. Can you guess where we went? Of course, it had to be "Pino Latte Café & Resort," located behind the Phra That Pha Sorn Kaew temple. This café offers stunning panoramic views of both the temple and the surrounding mountains.

We were determined to charge our phones and rest here before heading up to Phu Thap Boek. Yay! But the situation when we got off the car was no different from the temple. But hey, we're already here, there must be a place to sit! And we actually found a seat, and it even had a power outlet! We were so happy! 5555

Glancing at the clock, we realized it was almost 4 pm. We had to leave soon because our plan before going up to Phu Thap Boek was to see the wind turbines at Khao Kho. We had no idea where they were, but we assumed they were somewhere on the way to Phitsanulok. We planned to see the wind turbines and then go up to Phu Thap Boek via Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park because the road from Lom Sak was quite steep if we went up in the evening.

We left Pino Latte at 140 km/hr, looking for the turnoff to the wind turbines. We started to wonder if we were on the wrong road, so we turned around. We realized the wind turbines were behind us! We waved goodbye because it was getting late, and we continued on our way. We passed through Nakhon Thai district and turned right into Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park. At that point, our car had half a tank of gas left. We thought we would make it, but after a while, the low fuel warning light came on. Everyone in the car looked at each other, wondering what to do. It was getting dark, and we were far from the national park. We still had 20-30 kilometers to go to reach the road up to Phu Thap Boek. There was no signal for any of the mobile phone networks: TRUE, AIS, or dtac. We couldn't give up here! We had to get back! So we decided to turn off the air conditioning, turn down the music, and roll down the windows to listen to the sounds of the forest at night. We were all scared! During that almost hour-long drive, we chanted and thought about our parents.

After driving for about 20 minutes, we arrived at the hand-cranked gas station. It was amazing! I've never seen anything like it in my 20 years of life. Wow, I'm so excited!


After filling up the gas tank, we set off to find our accommodation for the night. It was already 6:30 PM and the sky was dark. Fortunately, one of our friends had been to Phu Tub Berk recently and knew of a place to stay. They took us to a place called "Amuay" (based on the Wi-Fi name), which offered three types of accommodation: tents for four people, capsule rooms for three to four people (both with shared bathrooms), and a large room for six people with a private bathroom and hot water heater. We opted for the large room, feeling relieved to have found comfortable accommodation for the night.

There's a funny story to tell as well. Initially, we understood that the large room did not have an ensuite bathroom, so we planned to take the capsule room, which was the only one left at that time, or a tent. However, the owner of the accommodation suggested a place not far from there, near a cabbage farm. It was a detached house that could comfortably sleep five people and had an ensuite bathroom for 1700 baht. We were immediately interested, so we asked the owner to take us to see it. It turned out that his "not far" was almost over a hill! (Just kidding, haha) So we went back to the original accommodation. But as we talked, we found out that the large room did have an ensuite bathroom! So we quickly agreed to take it.

7:30 PM. We finally secured our accommodation and moved our belongings in. We then ordered grilled meat and enjoyed it with the snacks we bought at the gas station. The grilled meat set cost 500 baht, which might seem expensive, but there were five of us, and we were all full after eating! So, it wasn't expensive at all...really!!


I had initially planned to relax by playing the guitar, grilling some meat, and sipping on a beer. However, I couldn't resist the fatigue from a day of adventure and decided to call it a night at 10 pm. I'm worried that I won't be able to wake up early enough to see the sunrise tomorrow. For now, good night and sweet dreams!


[Day 2] November 7, 2016

After finishing our meal, we returned to our accommodation to pack our belongings in preparation for our departure to the next destination. However, before leaving Phu Thap Boek, we decided to take a walk down to take pictures of the cabbage and strawberry farms near Rai Rim Pha, which only cost 20 baht per person to enter. We visited during the time when the cabbage flowers were just starting to bloom, and the mist was beginning to form. We felt that Khao Kho had a much more beautiful sea of mist, but if you're looking for a place to enjoy the cool air, Phu Thap Boek is a great option.

After taking pictures at the kale field, we set off for Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park. On the way, we stopped to admire the view at "Phu Phaeng Ma," which is not far from the road leading up to Phu Thap Boek. We parked our car at the entrance and walked up the hill for about 1 kilometer.

No matter how far the climb, we'll fight to the death! Hooray!!

After that, we walked across the street from the School of Politics and Military to see the water turbine. Although we didn't go to see the wind turbine, we came here instead!! 5555 We didn't walk very far.

The waterwheel is just a short walk away, and the air is refreshingly cool. A waterfall flows nearby, with crystal-clear water so cold you can see the fish (although there aren't any). The waterwheel was built to grind rice.
