Lamphun is often overlooked as a tourist destination, with many considering it a small province with limited attractions. Others may view it solely as a stopover point on their way to other destinations. However, this post aims to showcase some of Lamphun's hidden gems and encourage travelers to explore its beauty. While I have visited Lamphun on numerous occasions, this was my first dedicated trip to experience the province's charm. Traveling to Lampang is incredibly convenient, with options including buses, trains, and even airplanes. However, the fastest and most comfortable mode of transportation is undoubtedly flying. On this particular trip, I opted for Nok Air, which operates flights on this route (Don Mueang-Lampang). It was also my first experience flying on a propeller plane, which initially caused some apprehension. However, once airborne, the flight was perfectly normal, and my worries dissipated.

This morning, I embarked on a journey to Lampang, eager to maximize my exploration time on the first day. Let's delve into the unmissable destinations that await upon my arrival in this captivating city.

1. Upon arriving in Lampang, a must-do activity is taking a horse-drawn carriage ride around the city. This unique experience, still alive and thriving, is a hallmark of Lampang. It is said that a trip to Lampang is incomplete without a horse-drawn carriage ride.

..
Horse-drawn carriage services in Lampang province are available at the Old City Hall, in front of the Assawin Market, and in front of the Lampang Wiang Thong Hotel.
For more information and to book a horse-drawn carriage in advance, please contact the Lampang Horse-Drawn Carriage Association at Tel. 0-5421-9255.

2. The Old Community of Kad Kong Ta (Chinese Market) The atmosphere of the old market, the charm of visiting here would be the buildings, old architecture.
A blend of many ethnicities, whether walking, cycling, or riding a horse-drawn carriage, you'll get a different atmosphere.
But if you come on Saturday - Sunday, there will be a walking street in the evening.
It's a pity that I traveled on a weekday on this trip, so I missed the opportunity to walk on the walking street.
But I got the old, peaceful atmosphere, which is fascinating.

In addition to the charm of the buildings and the walking street of Kad Kong Ta, this area also has many stylish guesthouses with a riverside atmosphere for tourists. The prices are affordable for most tourists. For this trip, I chose to stay at The Riverside Guesthouse, a Lanna-style accommodation by the Wang River. The starting price is only 400 baht. The atmosphere around the accommodation and the interior are worth the price. There are also bicycles available for rent. You can contact them for more information at 054-227005.

3. Cycle along the Rachaphruek Bridge, also known as the White Bridge, located on Ratchadaphisek Road. This bridge crosses the Wang River and is situated near the Kong Ta Market, making it easily accessible by foot. It is a must-visit destination when in Lampang. Notably, most tourist attractions in Lampang have dedicated bicycle lanes, making it convenient to explore the city on two wheels. This is a perfect option for those who have ample time and prefer an alternative to the traditional horse-drawn carriage rides.

4. Khun Tan Tunnel: The Longest Railway Tunnel in Thailand

The Khun Tan Tunnel, known locally as "Tham Khun Tan" after the nearby Doi Khun Tan mountain, is the longest railway tunnel in Thailand.

A visit to Khun Tan Railway Station offers more than just picturesque photo opportunities. Visitors can pay respects at the shrine of Chao Pho Khun Tan, a revered spirit associated with the station.

Furthermore, the adjacent Doi Khun Tan National Park provides opportunities for hiking and exploration. Visitors can camp overnight and enjoy breathtaking views of the border region between Lampang and Lamphun provinces.

The most convenient way to get here from Lampang city is by train, which offers scenic views of the countryside and local life. Take the Northern Line train and get off at Khun Tan Railway Station. From there, you can walk to the park entrance, which is about 1.3 kilometers away.

5. Wat Sri Chum is the largest Burmese temple in Thailand, featuring a unique blend of Lanna and Burmese architectural styles.
Conveniently located in the heart of Lampang city, the temple is easily accessible by bicycle, horse carriage, or songthaew (shared taxi). Visitors can explore the temple grounds and pay their respects at the sacred shrines.

6. Located less than 20 kilometers from Lampang city center, Wat Phra That Lampang Luang is situated in Ko Kha District, Lampang Luang Subdistrict. This revered temple is considered the guardian temple of Lampang province and is the designated temple for those born in the year of the Ox. Visiting this sacred site is a must for anyone traveling to Lampang.

7. Wat Chedi Phra Kiat Phra Chom Klao Rachanusorn (Wat Phra Bat Pu Pha Daeng), also known as Doi Pu Yak or Doi Phra Bat Pu Pha Daeng, is located on a steep cliff, 815 meters above sea level. It is situated within the Doi Phra Bat Wildlife Sanctuary, Ban Thung Thong, Wiang Nuea Subdistrict, Jae Hom District, Lampang Province, one of the 12 #Must-Visit Cities.

To get there from Lampang city, take Highway 1035 to Jae Hom District. Once you reach Jae Hom, continue straight for about 1 kilometer until you see a left-hand turn with a village entrance archway. Turn into the village and continue for another 200 meters. You will find the road to Wat Chedi Phra Kiat on the left-hand side.

To reach this point, visitors must take a shuttle service provided by the temple for 100 baht per person. The journey involves an 800-meter walk.

For the best experience, it is recommended to visit early in the morning or late in the evening. This location offers stunning views of both sunrise and sunset, making it a popular destination in Lampang province.

8. Ngao District, approximately 80 kilometers from Lampang city, is a small, peaceful town known as "Ngao City."
Formerly known as Muang Ngern, Ngao District is a border district adjacent to Phayao Province. It boasts numerous hidden tourist attractions,
including the Yoeng Bridge, Wat Jong Kham Ngao, Mae Ka Waterfall, Kew Fu Waterfall, Lhum Phu Khieo, Ngao Hill Tribe Village, Tham Pha Thai National Park,
the Open-Air Cinema Museum, the Shrine of the Gatekeeper Spirit, and many more hidden gems nestled within the tranquil nature of this peaceful town.

Wat Chong Kham, Ngao, is located 10 kilometers from Ngao District. It is one of the oldest temples in Lampang Province. The architecture is magnificent and is a prominent example of Tai Yai art.

The Open-Air Cinema Museum, located in Ban Tha Charoen, Ban Rong Subdistrict, Ngao District, Lampang Province, offers free admission to all visitors.

The suspension bridge, also known as the elevated bridge, spans the Ngao River.

9. Kaew Fu Waterfall and Mae Ka Waterfall are located in Ngao District. During the rainy season, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is required to access these waterfalls. However, during the dry season, regular vehicles can access them. Kaew Fu Waterfall is another beautiful waterfall in Lampang Province. It was created by humans. The waterfall is named after a hill tribe member named Kaew Fu, who was the first to discover it. Mae Ka Waterfall is located nearby and is approximately 10 meters high with 6-7 smaller tiers.

10. Luang Phrao Sinkhole is a large natural pool located on a mountain within Tham Pha Thai National Park. The pool's crystal-clear water shimmers with hues of blue and emerald green, providing a habitat for diverse fish species. This hidden gem offers an unparalleled natural tourism experience in Lampang Province.
