Oh, poor Ah Mui... Her fate is truly pitiful.

She fled from China, carrying only a mat and a pillow, hoping to start a new life in Siam... What will become of her?

We secretly imagined a fun plot when Yai Muai invited us to visit "Mulika R.S. 124" in Kanchanaburi.

We have gathered information. This is a **new tourist attraction that takes us back in time to experience Rattanakosin during the reign of King Rama V, a period of immense change in Thailand. The abolition of slavery and the country's rapid development make this era a classic and captivating one.

Everyone seems to be going on trips dressed in traditional Thai clothing, acting like they're from the past, and taking pictures. Wow! I have to do it too!

Mallika City... With a city size that is not small.

"Because traveling makes our old world wider" This sentence made me and my girlfriend hold hands and set out to explore the world. We have a small page called "Escape work to travel" and a Blog called www.ibreak2travel.com

Reading to this line, we want to say... Going back many years ago when we first met, "I am a tourist who has to work full-time. My girlfriend is a full-time worker who wants to travel sometimes." We are so different. But when we started dating, the 2 differences found a compromise that made us reach the point where we wanted to create a page to take our working friends to travel with us. We can do it. Anyone can do it like us. Please support our shop.

Stop by and like our page. Give us some encouragement. So we know that you are always with us. "Work to be able to travel."

"Mueang Mallika R.S. 124" in Kanchanaburi: A Popular Destination for All Ages

The image depicts a breathtaking landscape, showcasing a vast expanse of rolling hills and lush greenery. The rolling hills, adorned with vibrant vegetation, create a sense of depth and perspective. The lush greenery, with its rich hues of green, adds a touch of vibrancy and life to the scene. The image evokes a sense of tranquility and serenity, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature.

Looking back at the face of the Chinese girl, I thought that a girl with such an international face would not fit in with a Thai dress. So, if you want to have the most fun, you need a concept. Therefore, our trip to Mallika City is in the style of "A Chinese girl lost in the capital at Mallika City, R.S. 124." Let's follow along.

Travel

Mallika City R.S. 124 is located just a short drive from Bangkok, approximately 2-3 hours away. To get there, follow the Bangkok-Kanchanaburi route and then take Highway 323, the Kanchanaburi-Sai Yok route, until kilometer 15. Mallika City is situated on the left-hand side, next to a Bangchak gas station, before the entrance to Prasat Muang Sing.

Getting to Mallika City from Bangkok without a car:

Option 1: Bus

  • Take a minivan or bus from Kanchanaburi to Bangkok and get off at the Kanchanaburi Bus Terminal (BKS).
  • From the bus terminal, take a bus on the Sai Yok - Thong Pha Phum - Sangkhlaburi route.
  • Alternatively, take a minivan from Kanchanaburi to Sangkhlaburi.
  • Get off at Mallika City (32 km), located near the PTT gas station at the entrance to Prasat Muang Sing Historical Park.

Option 2: Train

  • Take a train from Bangkok to Nam Tok Railway Station.
  • From Nam Tok, take a taxi or songthaew (shared taxi) to Mallika City (approximately 1 hour).

Additional notes:

  • The journey from Bangkok to Mallika City takes approximately 4-5 hours by bus and 3-4 hours by train.
  • It is recommended to book your bus or train tickets in advance, especially during peak season.
  • Taxis and songthaews are readily available at Nam Tok Railway Station.
  • The entrance fee to Mallika City is 200 baht for adults and 100 baht for children.

Please note: This information is based on publicly available sources and may be subject to change. It is always advisable to check with the relevant transportation providers for the most up-to-date information.

Although Mallika City is expansive, spending the entire day there might be excessive. Therefore, we planned to arrive at Mallika City at 2 pm to allow for an extended stroll until the evening. Subsequently, we intend to have dinner and watch a performance in the early evening.

The difference between arriving in the morning and afternoon is significant. In the morning, we can witness the daily routines of the villagers in Mallika, who wake up early to cook, prepare goods for sale, and open their shops. However, if we arrive in the afternoon, we will encounter a different set of activities, which we will explore later.

When Ah Mui arrived at Mallika R.E. 124, she exclaimed, "What is this place? Why is it so hot?"

It's really hot, isn't it? We're visiting in early April, so the weather is a bit warm. But don't worry, there are plenty of trees inside, so it should cool down as we walk around. First, we need to buy tickets at the entrance. The prices are reasonable, in our opinion. ## April 2017 Admission Fees: * Adults: 200 Baht / Children, Seniors, and Disabled: 100 Baht * Admission + Dinner + Show: Adults 700 Baht, Children 350 Baht (10% discount) ## Notes: * Children under 100 cm tall enter free. * Children between 100-130 cm tall and seniors aged 70 and above pay the child rate.

Today, we opted for the full option package, which includes admission, dinner, and a show, for a total price of 700 baht. However, we received a 10% discount, bringing the cost down to 630 baht per person. This means that after deducting the 200 baht admission fee, the cost for dinner and the show is 430 baht. We believe this is a good deal, as a decent dinner typically costs around 300-400 baht per person, and this includes a show as well. So, we decided to go for it.

We have our tickets, so it's time to enter the city. Ah Mui is being fussy, saying it's too hot to walk. Let's take a rickshaw then (the fare is 50 baht per ride).

To enter the city, one must first pass the gatekeeper.

The gatekeepers and the cart pullers waited at the entrance to collect tickets, while the city lord, with his impressive white beard and mustache, sat nearby.

The image depicts a scenic landscape with rolling hills and a winding river.

Let's get ready to board the sled.

Image of a beautiful beach with turquoise water and white sand.

We believe that ancient Thai oxcarts are similar to those of China.

Once on the cart, they will be dragged into the city.

From the front gate, the cart puller will pull the cart inside. Let's continue walking to Saphan Han.

After the tow truck dropped Ah Mui off in front of Saphan Han, she began to forget about the heat. This area was full of strange and interesting things, and Ah Mui, a girl new to the city, was wide-eyed with wonder. Let's get to know Saphan Han a little better.

Turnaround bridge

The bridge's name derives from its design. In the past, it was a single wooden plank spanning the canal, secured at one end and resting loosely at the other. When a boat needed to pass, the plank was rotated to allow passage. During the reign of King Rama V, the bridge was redesigned in the style of the Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy. This new bridge was a wide, arched wooden structure with small shops lining both sides and a walkway in the center. King Rama V was fond of visiting this bridge to purchase imported dried fruits, such as dried persimmons and various other types.

The original style of the bridge you're looking for no longer exists. If you want to see the original, you'll have to visit Mallika City, like this young woman here.

The interior of Saphan Han is divided into two rows of shophouses, with a walkway in the middle.

Stop by to see fresh fruits on Saphan Han.

There are also dried fruits.

At Saphan Han, there are Thai fabrics for sale. Just by trying them on, Ah Mui immediately wanted to change into a Thai dress.

"E-pring... I want to wear Thai clothes. I want to be a Thai girl."

After a short stroll on the Saphan Han bridge, the young woman remarked, "The Thai people are so warm and welcoming. The food is delicious, the fruits are fresh, and the traditional Thai clothing is exquisite. It's easy to fall in love with Thailand." With a smile, she added, "Let's go find you a beautiful Thai outfit to wear."

Renting a Thai costume at Mallika City

Mullika offers a variety of Thai costumes for rent, with various styles and colors to choose from. The rental fees are as follows:

  • Thai dress for women with a "sabai" (shoulder cloth): 200 baht
  • White lace dress with long sleeves from the reign of King Rama V: 300 baht for women, 100 baht for men
  • Men's "Ratchaphathan" dress: 300 baht
  • Children's dress: 50 baht

Rental costumes are available at the costume rental room, located near the Mallika R.E. 124 Ticket Office.

Ah Mui liked the long-sleeved cream lace dress. It looked very ladylike.

After selecting your costume, a changing room will be provided, along with a locker to store your personal belongings. We recommend bringing only essential items such as your mobile phone, wallet, and camera.

In the blink of an eye, our very own Ah Mui from the capital has transformed into Lady Tidti of the Talad Noi district.

Note: In the dressing room, you can borrow accessories and umbrellas. Please be careful not to run around too much, as the accessories might fall off and you will be responsible for any loss or damage.

Commercial district

Mallika City meticulously recreates the essence of prominent historical commercial districts, including Thanon Phraeng Nara, Thanon Phraeng Phutthon, Thanon Phraeng Sanphasat, Bang Rak, and Yaowarat. Each district is meticulously presented, highlighting its unique characteristics.

To make purchases in the various districts, you cannot use modern currency. Instead, you must exchange your money for "satang ru," the currency used in the past. The exchange rate is 1 satang ru = 5 baht. You can exchange your money at the service points within the Mallika City.

The commercial district in Mallika City

The Mallika City is a fascinating place where visitors can experience the lifestyle of people during the reign of King Rama V. The city features a variety of shops and businesses that sell authentic goods from the past. The shopkeepers and staff are all employees of Mallika City who have been trained to act and behave like people from the 19th century. This immersive experience allows visitors to step back in time and learn about the history and culture of Thailand.

This area is especially known for its traditional fragrances. Each shop offers a variety of ancient aromatic products, including bua ngah, fragrant powder, and scented candles. Visitors can not only purchase these items but also witness live demonstrations of their production.

Another must-try is this Thai dessert shop. Inside the shop, there are 3 types of Thai desserts that we should try, namely Thong Ek, Cha Mongkut, and Saneh Chan. These are now very difficult to find.

After a short walk, Khunying Tidti felt thirsty and wanted something cold to drink. We came across a shaved ice shop called "Ti Ma," which caught our attention because of its traditional ice shaving method and the use of banana leaves as cups for the sweet treats. This is a great way to avoid using Styrofoam cups.

Whenever you're hungry, come visit... the floating house area.

During that era, water transportation was the primary mode of travel, and shops were often located along the waterways. In the city of Mallika, a large floating platform was constructed to accommodate various businesses, including a coffee shop called Dong Hu (resembling a modern-day Starbucks) that served coffee brewed from imported beans. Additionally, a restaurant called Khao Gang Song Proat, which offered dishes favored by King Rama V, was also situated on this platform.

http://i2.wp.com/ibreak2travel.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/25600401-17-15-49-_KNP5060.jpg?resize=810%2C541

The floating restaurant offers a variety of delicious food, including rice and curry, rice noodles, papaya salad, and coffee.

By the time we arrived at the market, it had already closed, so we were unable to try any of the food.

If you want to try the food at the floating restaurant, it is recommended to come from noon onwards.

A Single-Family Home Simulating the Lifestyle of a Farmer

A short walk from the floating market, across the canal, you'll find a traditional Thai house where you can learn about rice farming with buffaloes. The house is inhabited by an elderly couple, and the rice they grow is actually milled and ground to make sweets sold in Mallika City. This is a truly authentic experience!

Traditional Thai houses often have a boat landing, which serves as a pier for boarding and disembarking boats.

The Kitchen Yard: An Ancient Fitness Corner

This phrase evokes the image of a traditional kitchen area serving as a space for physical activity in ancient times. It suggests that even in domestic settings, people found ways to stay active and engaged in physical fitness.

As we ambled along the path behind the traditional Thai house, we soon arrived at the kitchen. This is the main area for food preparation in Mallika City, which includes a rice mill, a rice barn, and a kitchen for cooking. Who would have thought that milling, husking, and pounding rice could burn so many calories!

Homegrown paddy rice harvested in Mallika City.

As dusk settled, the city dwellers began to close their shops and gather their belongings, signaling the end of the day. It was time for us to head to the "Reuan Muen," a traditional Thai house, to savor an authentic royal dinner and witness a special performance arranged by the Mallika City for its visitors.

Group Houses

The large Thai-style house served as a reception hall for distinguished guests of noblemen or wealthy merchants. As depicted in the film "The Overture," wealthy individuals in the past often maintained their own dance troupes to entertain guests. The house complex at Mallika City is the largest of its kind in Thailand. During the day, demonstrations of Thai classical dance are held, while in the evening, the house transforms into a venue for dinner and Thai classical dance performances.

Our brief summary of our visit to Mallika City:

  1. Mallika City is built to last, not just a temporary tourist attraction. They've planned for long-term sustainability.
  2. Everyone in the city, from guards (called "yams" in ancient times) to rickshaw drivers, vendors, farmers, villagers, and children, aged 18-81, are Mallika City employees!!!
  3. All the shops inside are authentic and functional. "They make their own perfumes and demonstrate the process." "They make their own snacks and demonstrate the process." "They grow their own rice, raise buffalo for plowing, harvest rice, hull rice, and grind rice, all by themselves."
  4. The city layout, ticket booths, clothing change points, bathroom and surrounding area cleanliness, and security are all well-designed and maintained.
  5. Oh!! You can't use modern money in the city. You have to exchange it for "satang ru" coins used in ancient times. There are exchange points both outside and inside Mallika City.

Drama

Some people have criticized the 200 baht entrance fee, not including the 150-300 baht Thai costume rental fee, as being expensive for some families. However, we see it this way: the rental fee for a Thai costume at a shop is usually 300-500 baht. If you don't want to spend money on renting a costume, you are not forced to. But if you want to feel immersed in the atmosphere, you can rent a costume. This issue should not be a cause for drama.

Cost: The entrance fee, ticket price, and food prices are reasonable in our opinion. Considering the long-term sustainability of such a business, it's important to support them. After all, they've put in a lot of effort. When we travel abroad, we're willing to pay more, so why not here?

Cons:

  • Limited shade: As the park is newly opened, there are not many mature trees, resulting in limited shade and sun exposure.
  • Inadequate staff: The staff in the changing rooms are limited, and the service needs improvement.
  • Lack of shaded resting areas: More shaded areas with seating are needed for visitors to rest and escape the sun.

Overall:

Mallika R.E. 124 is a historical park that allows visitors to experience what life was like in Thailand during the Rattanakosin era. It is a great place to learn about the country's history and culture, and to gain a deeper appreciation for its traditions. Visitors can explore traditional Thai houses, shops, and markets, and even watch demonstrations of traditional crafts and performances. The park is also a great place to take photos and enjoy the beautiful scenery. If you are interested in learning more about Thailand's history and culture, Mallika R.E. 124 is definitely worth a visit.

Mallika City is not suitable for... those who want to visit superficially, those who just want to take pictures in beautiful Thai costumes and then go home without wanting to learn anything. This is not a tourist attraction, but a place to learn about Thai culture during the reign of King Rama V, and they have posted a sign at the entrance.
