Baan Laem, the first coastal district of Phetchaburi, boasts a coastline stretching for tens of kilometers. However, unlike typical beach destinations, Baan Laem lacks white sandy beaches. Instead, its coastline is characterized by a unique mudflat ecosystem rich in various minerals.

The Untamed Beauty of Laem Beach

While Laem Beach may not boast the pristine white sands and crystal-clear waters of other beaches, it offers a different kind of beauty - the untamed beauty of nature. If your definition of beauty lies in the untouched wilderness, then Laem Beach will captivate you with its abundance of natural wonders.

Nestled in the heart of Thailand, Laem District holds a special place in my heart. Its allure lies in its seemingly ordinary facade, concealing a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. From birdwatching in lush mangroves to strolling through bustling salt farms, Laem offers a captivating glimpse into the local way of life. As one of the nation's largest salt-producing regions, Laem's salt farms paint a picturesque landscape, a testament to the region's rich heritage. Just a two-hour drive from the bustling metropolis of Bangkok, Laem beckons travelers seeking an escape into the tranquility of nature and the warmth of local culture.

A Perfect Weekend Getaway to Ban Laem: Two Days of Fun and Excitement

Embark on a delightful two-day adventure to Ban Laem, a charming coastal town brimming with hidden gems and exciting activities. Let's explore the highlights of this captivating destination:

Cycling with joy at Laem Phak Bia

The first destination for many visitors to Ban Laem is the Laem Phak Bia Environmental Research and Development Project, initiated by His Majesty the King. This project focuses on researching natural wastewater treatment methods. The area is a prime birdwatching spot due to its proximity to the sea, mangrove forests, and numerous water reservoirs.

Currently, personal vehicles are not permitted within the project area. However, bicycles are available for rent, allowing for leisurely exploration. Visiting in the late afternoon is highly recommended. The park opens early in the morning and closes around 6:00 PM, with a slight grace period allowed for visitors to exit. Admission is free.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the mangrove bridge.

The Pak Bia mangrove forest is considered to be very fertile. The project has built a wooden bridge about 800 meters long for us to walk and see various plants. The bridge extends to the sea, creating a very shady path. It is a must-visit for photographers, especially in the evening when the atmosphere at the end of the bridge is even better.

Enjoy watching crabs and birds.

Laem Phak Bia is a feeding ground for both resident and migratory birds, with over 240 species recorded. During the winter, there is a wide variety of birds to observe. Try cycling around to see what birds we can find. And within the mangrove forest, try looking at the ground for a moment, you will notice small creatures foraging with beautiful colorful claws everywhere. This bird-watching activity helps us to appreciate the value of nature.

Fisherman's Villa Seaview: Sleep Soundly and Find Joy

Fisherman's Villa Seaview, a small resort located just 6 km from Laem Pak Bia, offers a peaceful retreat for those seeking tranquility. The resort features charmingly decorated bungalows nestled amidst lush gardens and converted commercial building rooms. With prices starting from around 2,000 baht, Fisherman's Villa Seaview provides an affordable and comfortable getaway.

The resort boasts a range of amenities, including a heated swimming pool, a beachfront relaxation area with wooden gazebos, and bicycles for leisurely rides. This tranquil haven offers unparalleled peace and relaxation. Notably, the resort is a designated smoke-free and alcohol-free zone, making it an ideal choice for families and those seeking serenity.

Fisherman's Villa Seaview recently opened a new semi-hostel accommodation zone at the beginning of last year. It is suitable for group stays, with rooms ranging from three to five beds. Prices start at 1,200 baht and increase according to room size. The hostel zone has a lovely decorated common area and a wide balcony by the sea for relaxing and enjoying the view. There is also a courtyard for small activities.

Joyful fun playing in the mud sea

The beaches at Ban Laem and Fisherman's Villa Seaview may not boast pristine sands or crystal-clear waters, but they offer a unique experience: mudflat exploration. Visitors can enjoy the thrill of playing in the mud while experiencing the local way of life by foraging for various shellfish. This unexpected adventure is sure to leave you with a wide smile. To participate in this exciting activity, simply contact the resort.

Enjoying the stars in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand

As night falls, sit and enjoy the sea breeze, gazing at the stars in the sky and the reflection of the stars in the sea from the small and large fishing boats. This is an atmosphere that will make you fall in love with Ban Laem without realizing it. The stargazing corner at Fisherman's Villa Seaview is truly stunning.

Joyfully watching the sunrise of a new day

Waking up early at Fisherman's Villa Seaview in Ban Laem is a must. The breathtaking sunrise over the vast ocean is an unforgettable experience. The serene morning atmosphere will fill you with joy and tranquility.

Indulge in the ultimate ice cream experience that will leave your taste buds tingling.

While skipping a meal isn't inherently wrong, you might regret missing out on "Liver-Trembling Ice Cream," a seemingly ordinary roadside eatery that harbors an extraordinary secret. The highlight that keeps customers coming back for more is the all-you-can-eat ice cream buffet with a variety of toppings.

Order an "A-Te" ice cream, one cup per person, two scoops for 39 baht, three scoops for 49 baht, and get a set of side dishes that you can eat as much as you want. During the hot season, there is a special set of two scoops of ice cream served with sticky rice and mango for only 59 baht. How does it feel to be so happy? You have to try it.

The shop is open from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM and is located less than 100 meters from Fisherman's Villa Seaview.

Enjoy fresh seafood at affordable prices.

Besides delicious ice cream, the Shatan Tap ice cream shop also sells general food at incredibly low prices, making one wonder if they are even making a profit (haha...). They offer both single-dish meals and rice dishes, including Isaan food and Thai food. However, the most recommended option is the seafood, as the shop is located in a fishing community, guaranteeing fresh ingredients every day. And of course, the prices are very wallet-friendly.

Birdwatching at Ban Pak Talay: A Joyful Experience

Besides Laem Phak Bia, another important birdwatching spot in Ban Laem district is Ban Pak Talay. Here, resident birds can be found foraging all year round, and during the winter months, rare migratory birds can often be spotted. Birdwatching involves walking through the villagers' salt fields. You can walk freely, but please do not step on the earthen ridges. Foreigners with large lenses and cameras flock to watch the birds during the winter season.

Enjoying the beauty of the Ubosot at Wat Nok Pak Talay

The majestic golden ordination hall, resembling a large sailing ship, stands out prominently. This is Wat Nok Pak Thala, where the newly built ordination hall boasts both stunning exterior and interior. The exquisite murals adorn the walls, while the exterior is decorated with stucco sculptures depicting characters from the epic poem "Sankha Thong".

Cool Down with Refreshing Palm Sugar Coffee

Sweet Salt Cafe: A Refreshing Oasis with Local Charm

Sweet Salt Cafe is a cozy haven offering respite from the heat with its refreshing air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and charming decor. Remarkably, this cafe boasts large iced coffees, including espresso, cappuccino, mocha, and latte, for a mere 40 baht – a rare find in today's market.

But the true highlight is the cafe's signature touch: candied palm fruit topping on their coffee creations. For a small additional cost, you can enjoy this unique and delightful twist on your favorite beverage.

Furthermore, Sweet Salt Cafe serves as a distribution point for local "OTOP" products made with sea salt, adding another layer of local charm to the experience.

Relax and rejuvenate with a salt spa at Gankhan Thong.

The Renowned Sea Salt of Ban Laem District

Ban Laem District is renowned for its OTOP (One Tambon One Product), particularly the famous sea salt. The Khang Han Thong sea salt is the most celebrated, making it the go-to destination for purchasing sea salt-based products.

From soaps and shampoos to skin care creams and various beauty products, there's a wide selection to satisfy every woman's needs. Additionally, the district offers a range of products for indulging in a luxurious sea salt spa experience.

In addition to selling OTOP products, Kang Han Thong also offers Thai massage, facial massage, and body scrubs using sea salt products. The price is affordable, with each course costing 300 baht. It's a great way to experience a traditional Thai spa with a modern twist.

Experience the Joyful Lifestyle of Salt Farmers

Laem District is a salt field, one of the largest salt-producing areas in the country. During the summer, if you pass by, you will see the villagers working hard to harvest their salt, which is called "salt demolition". Most of them start working in the morning and finish in the afternoon. Some plots may start in the evening and continue the next morning. Each salt demolition in a plot is done about three weeks apart. If you are lucky enough to pass by at the right time, you will see the unique way of life of the people of Laem.

The first step on the soft sand of Laem Luang brings joy.

The first stretch of sandy beach in Phetchaburi begins at the tip of Laem Pak Bia, known as Laem Luang Beach. To be honest, this beach is not developed for tourism or recreation, nor is it particularly beautiful. However, it does have its own unique charm, as mentioned earlier.

Previously, the only way to reach Laem Luang Beach was by boat from Lam Khlong to the end of Laem Phak Bia. However, a well-paved road now leads directly to the beach. If you wish to reach the far end of the beach, you can simply walk there.

There are numerous signs indicating the turnoff to Laem Luang Beach. However, the most convenient access point is the one marked "First Sand Beach," as suggested by the author.

With a joyful heart, I pay respect to Luang Pho Thong.

The youngest of the legendary five sacred sibling Buddha statues of the Central Plains (if the legend of the three siblings does not include this one), Luang Pho Thong, of Wat Khao Takera, Ban Laem District, is a Buddha statue that is not large, but is highly respected. If anyone likes to worship Buddha and is interested in religion, when they come to Ban Laem, they should stop by and pay their respects. It is only a short distance from Ban Laem District.
