Angkor Wat History

Angkor Wat is a religious site located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It was built during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century.

The Construction of Angkor Wat and the Rise of Angkor Thom

The construction of Angkor Wat began in the mid-12th century under King Suryavarman II, dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. In 1177, the Cham invaded Angkor, prompting King Jayavarman VII to relocate the capital to Angkor Thom (present-day Siem Reap). Subsequently, he constructed Angkor Thom and the Bayon temple, north of Angkor Wat, as the new Khmer capital.

In 1586, a Portuguese priest named António da Madalena became the first Westerner to visit Angkor Wat. However, it was the discovery of Angkor Wat by Henri Mouhot, a French entomologist and explorer, over a century ago that truly opened the temple to the world.

Travel

A total of 7 people.

Day 1: Journey from Bangkok to Poipet Border Market (Private car, fuel cost shared)

Day 2: Tonle Sap Lake and Pub Street

Day 3: Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon Temple, Ta Prohm Temple, Pub Street.

Day 4: Return to Bangkok.

Currency used in Cambodia: US Dollar/Riel (Exchange dollars for smaller denominations, such as $1 and $2 bills, as most shops do not have change).

On the morning of the 27th, at 6:00 am, I arrived at the Poipet border crossing. I parked my car at the car park opposite the Thai Panich Bank, which costs 150 baht per day. The car park is well-maintained, with a roof and security guards on duty around the clock.

A 200-meter walk from the parking lot leads to the checkpoint, with vendors lining both sides of the path. The mornings are particularly lively with a bustling atmosphere.

When passing through Cambodian immigration, officers may ask for money. They will hold up a 100 Thai baht note. It is crucial not to give them any money and to ignore their request.

After pumping, they walked out. Some people, unaware of the situation, offered them money.

Upon crossing the border, you can purchase a SIM card for 150 baht. This SIM card offers unlimited data for 7 days (no calls). The SIM card shop also offers money exchange services.

There are two ways to travel to Siem Reap.

  • A bus costs $9 per person and departs every hour from the front of the SIM card store.

- Van taxi rental, price negotiable (we got it for $10 per person to the hotel)

The arrival of the man in the gray suit shattered the market's tranquility.

The price was $12 per person, which we were unwilling to pay. This led to a loud argument, attracting the attention of everyone in the market. The driver said that if we didn't go with him, no one else would take us. We decided to walk away, but the driver followed us, saying that he wouldn't let anyone else take us. He followed us everywhere we went. Finally, a person in a pink shirt intervened and helped to de-escalate the situation. They spoke politely and negotiated a price of $10, which we were happy with. We gave them a tip. It was a frustrating start to our day in Cambodia.

And this person is here to help us.

After that, we headed to Siem Reap, a distance of 152 kilometers. However, the journey took almost 4 hours. Oh, this country is so laid-back! The speed limit is 80 kilometers per hour throughout the journey, even when there are no other vehicles on the road. To make matters worse, the day we traveled coincided with their election campaign, which further slowed down our progress.

Along the way

The 1953 Siem Reap Hostel costs US$5 per person per night. It is located near Pub Street, within walking distance. The hostel is clean and has good air conditioning.

Checked into the accommodation and contacted the tour guide, who was arranged from Thailand and spoke Thai.

On the first day, they charged 800 baht per tuk-tuk, renting 2 tuk-tuks for a total of 7 people. They went to **Tonle Sap Lake** to see the way of life of the people living by the water and admire the largest freshwater lake in Asia. The journey was quite long, taking a full hour.

The journey continued for only half an hour before the tire burst, as you can see.

While waiting for the tire change, I took a walk around the area and took some photos. The atmosphere was reminiscent of Thailand 30-40 years ago.

The tire change is complete, let's move forward. It looks like it might rain again. Well, I've been lucky in 2018, the sky has always been clear wherever I go. Don't be jealous of us, okay?

We have arrived! It's the rice field, the canal near our house! Mint is very confused.

The journey to experience the local way of life requires a one-hour boat ride from here, costing 20 USD per person. This price is simply outrageous. We and our friends decided to skip it and return to our accommodation. It seems like the experience is not worth the cost.

On the way back, let your friends stop by to buy tickets to Angkor Wat. It's on the way, so you won't have to rush too much in the morning.

Moreover, in the morning, there are many people. If you go late, you will definitely miss the opportunity to sit in a good spot to watch the sunrise.

This is the ticket booth, which is a bit grand.

Ticket Pass: Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom entrance fees included.

  • 1 day pass 37 usd All temples included. Keep your ticket safe as it will be checked every time you enter or exit. Do not lose it under any circumstances.
  • 3 day pass 62 usd All temples included. For those who need to spend several days walking, as it is very large. You won't be able to see everything even if you walk all day.

This is the first time I've bought a ticket with my picture on it. It's so cool! Now no one can steal my stuff. Haha!

The ticket booth area was extremely crowded. There was also a flea market with a wide variety of food and clothing stalls.

This is a Cambodian guide who speaks Thai, but doesn't explain anything.

After checking into the hotel, let's have dinner and then head out for some fun! Across from the hotel, there's a restaurant that serves incredibly delicious food at affordable prices. The flavors are just like home, and some might even say it's better than some restaurants in Thailand. Their stir-fried Mama noodles are particularly delicious.

Don't let the owner know what we ordered. 555

A short walk will take you there. It's like our own Pattaya, but with a much better atmosphere. There are a lot of good-looking young people here.

There will be a total of 4 alleys, like a 4-way intersection, with beer shops all along the way.

With just 15 baht, you can enjoy a beer. Go ahead and try it.

The stir-fried ice cream here is delicious. We tried two shops and both were great. We tried the dragon fruit stir-fried ice cream and our friend tried the passion fruit. It was delicious and definitely worth trying.

Go to sleep.

Early in the morning, we left the hotel at 4:00 AM to watch the sunrise at Angkor Wat.

Today we met our new guide who speaks excellent English and is very friendly. They also helped us take photos. We rented a 7-seater van for 2,000 baht for the day.

Facebook Guide: Phy Non (Recommendations)

This is the best picture of the trip. It's called the "popular angle," but even at 10 am, the sun is still not visible due to the heavy clouds. The guide recommended visiting during December to March for the most spectacular views, when the light is a million times more magnificent.

Looking across the street from where the camera is set up, where are all these people coming from?

This is another spot where you can watch the sunrise, if you don't want to be crowded with people. However, the view is not as beautiful as the first spot.

The rear of the building offers stunning views.

Next, we head to Angkor Thom.

Our model is incredibly hot, to say the least.

The path to Ta Prohm temple is more shaded than the first two sections, with an abundance of trees.

Ta Prohm is an ancient temple built during the reign of King Jayavarman VII in 1186 AD, dedicated to his mother. It is renowned for its overgrown trees and roots that intertwine with the temple's structures, creating a picturesque and atmospheric setting. The temple gained further recognition as a filming location for the movie Tomb Raider.

Along the way, we will see large trees like this growing in many places, each one beautiful. We couldn't stop taking pictures.

Another landmark on the treasure map, waiting for a long time to get this picture.

While the initial location we sought wasn't particularly popular, once we started filming there, it became a major attraction, drawing long queues of people.

Beautiful all the way out.

The day is over, and I'm so hot I feel like my liver is going to explode. Let's meet at the usual place tonight.

Can you recommend the Angkor What? Bar? The owner, a French man, is incredibly attractive.

The staff at Banana Leaf are so friendly and funny that they have earned the nickname "My Mom".

The pizza is delicious.

Are all our friends like this?

Near Pub Street, there is a Night Market with a wide variety of goods.

How many sticks do you want? We have everything: snakes, scorpions, spiders, centipedes.

We are delighted to have had this experience and are now returning home.

See you on the next trip up the mountain again.
