Early last year, we had a sudden urge to go hiking. However, all our planned destinations were fully booked, leaving us frustrated. We then stumbled upon a mountain called "Mon Thu Le," a name we were unfamiliar with, to say the least. Its lack of popularity made booking a breeze. The mere prospect of trekking and breathing fresh air filled us with excitement, and thus, our trip was born.

For those who haven't heard of this mountain yet, follow us to discover an amazing experience.

We boarded the Bangkok-Mae Sot bus from the central bus station at night. Then, we took a shared taxi to the Tha Song Yang Subdistrict Administrative Organization. The shared taxi can be boarded at the Mae Sot bus station, which is very convenient. We woke up in the morning and arrived in Mae Sot. After getting off the bus, we walked a few steps and boarded the shared taxi.

Upon reaching the Tha Song Yang Subdistrict Administrative Organization, we arranged for porters and a vehicle to transport us to the trailhead. The supplies we entrusted to the young porters included tents and communal food, which we had also prepared for them. We also had lunch and ordered packed lunches for the midday meal. The trailhead to Mon Thu Lay is located at the end of the village, and it was a short drive to reach it.

The initial section of the trail traverses rice fields and gently rolling hills. While the terrain is not technically challenging, the intense sunlight can lead to fatigue. As you progress, the path enters a forested area with a sustained incline. The final approach to the campsite involves navigating rocky sections that may require some hand-assisted scrambling, adding a touch of excitement to the journey.

Our group reached the campsite just before sunset. Looking back, it was incredible how far we had come. In the morning, we had looked up from below and wondered if we would really make it.

We have finally arrived. : )

The weather was pleasant during our visit, with mild temperatures that only required a single layer of long sleeves for comfort. The campsite was nestled amidst rolling hills and surrounded by trees, providing shelter from the wind. The following morning, we embarked on a short hike to the summit to witness the breathtaking sunrise.

It took about an hour from the camp to reach the top of the mountain. We followed behind the young porter who ran and jumped tirelessly (and even challenged us to run with him, but I politely declined).

As the warm, golden sun began to peek through the blue sky, fatigue instantly vanished.

From the summit, there are trails leading to other viewpoints along the ridge, but our group did not go there. Even so, we felt that the view was so beautiful that we wanted to sit and admire it for a long time.

For those who are short on time, they can simply walk down the same path and return. However, our group stayed for another day, trekking to Mon Kluy, a neighboring mountain that is not too far away. However, the trail is said to be challenging and tiring, and it lived up to its reputation. We had to descend a steep, slippery slope to a stream, which was our lunch spot and the lowest point of the trek. Then, we had to climb back up to reach the summit of Mon Kluy, where our accommodation for the night was located.

The breathtaking views of the layered mountain ranges and the delicious taste of instant noodles enjoyed with the sunset were our sources of encouragement along the way.

On a positive note, Doi Mon Kluay is accessible by car. On our last day, we didn't have to hike down. Instead, a pickup truck picked us up and drove us to the Tha Song Yang Subdistrict Administrative Organization office. (The descent was winding and bumpy, making for a somewhat tense ride in the back of the truck.) After showering and changing clothes, we went in search of food. We found a place that served small plates of rice with curry, which, considering the energy we had expended hiking, was not quite enough.

It fills my heart with joy, I don't know why. : )

I hope Mon Tu Lay will be the destination for adventurous friends on your next trip.
