This trip was planned in late 2018 with the intention of visiting northern Laos in November 2019. After returning the car, we picked up our belongings and headed to the airport for our return flight. This trip left me with a sense of unfinished business. Our time in Nong Khiaw should have been at least two days, as there were several tourist attractions we didn't get to see and we could have soaked up the atmosphere more. If you have limited time, you should choose between Nong Khiaw and Luang Prabang. If you go to Nong Khiaw, you can take a boat trip to the old town of Ngoi or continue on to Khoua, Phongsaly Province, on the Lao-Vietnamese border. The atmosphere here is truly authentic and reflects the local way of life. However, if you prefer convenience and want to see art, culture, or popular tourist attractions, then Luang Prabang is the better choice. If you have plenty of time, you can visit both places. As for me, I'll have to find an opportunity to come back and try again next time.
