Especially the fjord routes we're about to explore together. We guarantee you'll see Norway from diverse perspectives, whether it's the grandeur of nature, the charm of local houses, and experiences you can't find anywhere else.
HIGHLIGHTS
This route will take you winding through the magnificent fjords of the western coast, experiencing both peaceful villages hidden amidst nature and beautiful classic Norwegian tourist towns. We chose to travel during spring when wildflowers are blooming in welcome along both sides of the road, while there's still snow to marvel at in the mountain zones... If you're ready, let's set off on this adventure together!

Upon arriving in Oslo, you'll find the beautiful, modern Oslo Airport (Gardermoen), which is Norway's main airport. Here you'll find convenient and fast transportation with comprehensive public transport systems connecting to the city and various tourist destinations, making travel from the airport into the city or to other destinations easy and straightforward. And for those who prefer self-driving like us, you can choose to rent a car from leading companies at Oslo Airport to continue your journey to your destinations.

We especially love the design that uses Norwegian pine wood - elegant, stylish, and warm.

From the airport, you can conveniently take the train into the city (but we rented a car and drove from here).

Experience Fjords in Every Season
Norwegian fjords are like nature's canvas, painted with different beauty in each season, making this a captivating destination no matter when you visit.
In winter, the fjords are covered with pristine white snow like a painting, highlighting the colorful Scandinavian-style houses that stand out against the pure white snow, creating a peaceful and breathtakingly beautiful atmosphere.
When entering summer, the sky becomes bright and the weather clear, perfect for various outdoor activities. You can fully explore different tourist attractions and experience the vibrant life of the fjords because daylight lasts very long during this period.
Autumn offers an especially romantic atmosphere with the beautiful gradient colors of changing leaves, and the number of tourists isn't too dense, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in nature's beauty.
For those who love balance like us, we choose spring with our trip starting in mid-May. The weather is pleasantly cool, travel is more comfortable than winter because roads are snow-free and ferries operate comprehensively, various wildflowers begin to bloom and show off, and mountain peaks still have beautiful snow to see. Plus, accommodation prices remain friendly, not as high as summer season.
The route we'll recommend will take you to experience the charm of fjords in various cities on Norway's western coast including Aurland, Flåm, Reed, Olden, Geiranger, Hjelle, and the Trollstigen road. Each location has its own unique beauty and is ready to offer new perspectives of Norway that will impress you year-round.
For travel from Oslo Airport to these cities, there are various route options, both express highways for convenience or secondary routes with spectacular natural scenery on both sides. We recommend planning a trip that experiences both - using one route going and another returning. In our case, we'll use secondary roads heading to southern cities first (routes 7 and 52), then gradually drive north and return to Oslo via highway (tollway E136 and E6).
Secondary roads passing through beautiful nature

When entering the fjord area, the view will be like this. The valley below is where we're staying in Aurland village.

And here are the cities and villages in Norway's fjord land that we visited:
Aurland is a village of true peaceful beauty by the fjord. Snow on mountain peaks that still partially covers is gradually melting, revealing lush green land. The fresh and cool morning air is perfect for strolling along the fjord, breathing pure air, or driving up the mountain to view the vast, magnificent panorama of Aurlandsfjord that maintains its tranquility and purity. Being able to see Norwegian-style houses nestled amidst stunning nature, with small flowers beginning to bloom along the roadside, creates a relaxing and unforgettably impressive atmosphere.

Flåm is one of the top destinations for tourists who use public transport to explore this area under the route called "Norway in a nutshell." For those who drive themselves like us, there's no exception - we must visit here too. Spring here is full of life after the long winter. Various wildflowers begin to show off along the walking paths, adding bright colors to the surrounding landscape. Traveling by the Flåm Railway during this period reveals spectacular scenery of lush green valleys contrasting with snow-capped peaks and overflowing streams, making you feel like you're experiencing nature fully reviving.
The tourist hub is located around the harbor, which is the connection point for travel by train, bus, and boat. There are also many shops and museums waiting for tourists to visit... For those wanting to see views from above, you can walk up the hill behind town. It takes no more than 15 minutes to enjoy the spectacular scenery of Flåm town paired with the magnificence of the fjord.

Deep behind the hills is the peaceful residential area of locals, surrounded by magnificent nature

Bergen is one of Norway's bustling tourist cities. The colorful wooden buildings that are characteristic of the Bryggen district contrast against the blue-gray sky, creating an atmosphere that's classic yet vibrant. Flowers in public parks and on house balconies begin to bloom and show their beauty, making the city even more lively. Even though there's occasional light rain, which is normal for Bergen, it only adds more romance to exploring the small alleyways or taking boat trips to view the fjords around the city.

City atmosphere

When here, many people don't miss the chance to explore and taste fresh seafood at the fish market located at the city harbor. There are shops in both tent-style lined up like walking through our local markets, or slightly upscale ones inside buildings like restaurants. The menu offers a wide variety to choose from. Although prices are a bit steep, it's definitely a worthwhile experience.

Reed is a small village hidden amidst pristine nature, and during spring it reveals truly peaceful beauty. Snow on the high mountains slowly begins to melt, revealing lush green forests and meadows that come back to life. The cool, pure air invites you to walk along nature study trails or simply sit and relax by Lake Breimsvatn, which beautifully reflects the mountains and sky. This place is especially perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of big cities and truly immerse themselves in nature's tranquility.
We stayed at this village for 2 nights to explore nearby towns. From our previous stay in Aurland to Reed, there were beautiful spots along the way for photography throughout the journey.

Olden is a small village located at the end of Nordfjord and serves as the gateway to Briksdalbreen glacier, one of the arms of Jostedalsbreen, Europe's largest glacier. If you have time, we recommend exploring the nearby Briksdal glacier. This place is a perfect blend of tranquility and nature's magnificence.
This is a point with a harbor to accommodate large cruise ships, so it's not surprising that the village has restaurants, souvenir shops, and outlets selling outdoor goods that create excitement for those starting to crave shopping after several days of pure nature touring.
The route from our accommodation in Reed to Olden has beautiful views all the way

High-angle atmosphere of Olden

It's a village nestled in a valley with a stream flowing through, houses arranged neatly and beautifully

Deep in the valley there's a lake that collects melted snow water from the mountains before overflowing as a stream flowing through the village

Hjelle is a peaceful village by Lake Oppstrynsvatn. Especially during spring, this place becomes a reflection of pure beauty. The clear blue-green lake reflects the mountains still snow-capped at their peaks and lush green pine forests beautifully onto the calm water surface. The cool, peaceful air is perfect for lakeside walks or kayaking out to experience nature's beauty up close.

Geiranger is one of the highlights on Norway's fjord route. Even though getting here requires driving through curve after curve winding over high mountains before descending to the town hidden by the fjord, the views on both sides of the road and various viewpoints along this route are breathtakingly beautiful (both stunning and thrilling). During spring, the famous waterfalls Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil, which were frozen in winter, return to flowing rapidly and echoing thunderously throughout the fjord. Fjord cruising during this period reveals amazing scenery of nature blooming to its fullest, allowing you to experience the magic of this UNESCO World Heritage fjord.

Past the town going up the mountain, snow still covers quite densely during spring

Trollstigen
This isn't a city or village, but a route winding through high mountains between Sylte and Åndalsnes towns, considered another highlight of this region. This road offers an exciting driving experience and stunning scenery. This challenging serpentine winding road takes us through magnificent landscapes of valleys still snow-covered on mountain peaks, and melting glaciers forming large waterfalls cascading down majestically.
At the road's highest point, there's a tourist service center and an elegant Norwegian-style viewing platform, revealing the road's serpentine curves with steep cliffs and incredibly tall waterfalls that seem unbelievable we could drive through. However, some sections of the road may close during certain seasons, so please check every time before traveling.

Conclusion Norway's fjord route isn't just a dream destination for tourists, but a place ready to offer impressive experiences in every season. Whether it's the lush green of summer, the colors of autumn, the pure white of winter snow, or the new beginnings of spring like we've shared - each season has its own unique charm, making it possible to visit year-round and discover new aspects of Norway never seen before!
