...Located on Highway 323, Ban Pong - Dan Chedi 3, at Km 103, Ban Hin Dad Intersection, Thong Pha Phum District, Kanchanaburi Province, there is a place to stay that I have been looking forward to visiting. To escape the hustle and bustle and relax during the festival...to stay with a garden house surrounded by the scent of nature and a simple lifestyle in the style of...a garden house Phu Pha Tat Homestay
Turning left from Hin Dad Intersection for approximately 500 meters, you will find a small entrance on the left leading to the homestay. Upon entering, you will be greeted by a bamboo grove that provides a cool and shady atmosphere. Next, you will come across the houses, of which there are 4-5. While waiting for the housekeeper to clean the room and with no other guests around, I took the opportunity to explore the different houses. Later, I had the chance to speak with Uncle Muk, the owner of Phu Pha Tad, who explained the origins and design concepts behind each house. His approach to creating a garden here was also quite interesting. Let's take a look at the houses, starting with the first one.
The Pavilion of the Sun and Moon
The First Wooden House: A Fusion of Styles and History
This is the first wooden house built after Uncle Ink purchased the garden plot in 1945. It has served as his residence ever since. The architectural style is a blend of Thai influences, appearing as a modernized Thai house. The gable resembles a northern Thai design, while the verandah is reminiscent of central Thai houses. The doors are reminiscent of old houses from the Ayutthaya period, while the bathroom resembles a Balinese-style resort. The decorative elements include both antique and modern pieces, sourced from various corners of the world.
The open space in front of the house serves as a camping area. A large earpod tree provides shade, and a mountain-style swing adds a touch of rustic charm, perfect for photo opportunities or simply enjoying the outdoors.
The spacious veranda serves as a place for relaxation, leisure activities, and stargazing. While it was initially roofless, a translucent roof was later added to prevent the loss of usable space during the rainy season. This design allows natural light to permeate the space, reducing the need for artificial lighting and creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
This house has two bedrooms with very large spaces. I think it can accommodate 20-30 people if the beds are removed. The ceiling is covered with woven bamboo, which looks unique.
The bathroom features two resort-style rooms, divided into a wet area for showering under the stars, as it has no roof! The dry area houses a toilet and sink, decorated in a country style.
The decorative items include both antique pieces and objects collected by Uncle Ink from various corners of the world.
The space beneath the house serves as a relaxation area, where people can eat, drink coffee, and enjoy the natural surroundings. The area is decorated with various items that blend seamlessly with nature, such as hollowed-out palm tree trunks (whose purpose is unclear), hanging mobiles made of stones and string, woven hammocks, wooden chairs, and even concrete pillars wrapped in wood to soften their appearance.
The House of Phra Phuang Phra Phaeng
This house is a semi-detached house with two houses built next to each other. There is a patio in the middle connecting the two houses and a pavilion for relaxing. Stepping into the house, you will find a small living room for watching TV before reaching the bedroom. The bedroom can accommodate two large beds and is very spacious. The bathroom is resort-style, with exposed brick walls and a hidden shower in the trees. The floor of the shower area is covered with pebbles for foot massage while showering. The toilet area has a window that can be opened to enjoy the view if you sit for too long. This house was built because there was leftover wood. Uncle Ink wanted to build another house to expand by selling some of the land to pay for the construction of this house.
A house full of flirtation and charm.
A Cozy Retreat for Two: Repurposing Wood for a Romantic Cottage
After constructing two grand houses, Uncle Ink desired a smaller dwelling for a loving couple. However, limited resources and a scarcity of wood presented a challenge. Undeterred, he ingeniously repurposed leftover wood, meticulously cutting and splitting it into smaller pieces. This resourceful approach resulted in a charming and intimate cottage, perfectly suited for a couple seeking a cozy retreat.
In addition, there is a wooden-winged house, or "Aod Aeon Ao Sao" house, which is Uncle Muk's house located in front of the "Pha Noen Pha No" house. Sometimes it is also open for accommodation. And the "Rarikra Ri" house, which I did not have the opportunity to visit because the guests had just arrived.
Food Options
The package includes one breakfast and one dinner, both of which are included in the 800 baht per person price. Breakfast consists of pork bone porridge and coffee or tea.
The dinner was abundant, featuring mainly vegetables and fruits grown in the garden, which served as the primary ingredients. Even the rice was homegrown, cultivated in the garden itself.
A Tranquil Morning in the Orchard
The morning air is crisp and cool, with a gentle mist hanging low, making it almost impossible to leave the comfort of the bed. Even at night, there's no need for a fan, as the natural coolness prevails. Uncle Ink's orchard boasts a diverse array of fruits, from star apples and bananas to jackfruit, dragon fruit, pomelo, mangoes, langsat, mangosteen, rambutan, and countless others. The fragrant rice, similar to brown rice, is grown without the use of pesticides, ensuring its purity.
The guest book is filled with entries from a diverse range of nationalities, including European, Korean, and Taiwanese visitors.
Overview of Phu Pha Taad Homestay
This unique homestay is a testament to the imaginative vision of Uncle Ink, who has blended various elements to create a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing space. It can be considered a work of art in itself. The warm and welcoming atmosphere, coupled with Uncle Ink's hospitality, and the serene setting amidst a lush fruit orchard, evoke a sense of being at home in a peaceful garden retreat.
