"Doi Suthep" is a well-known landmark for many people. "Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Ratchawarawihan", a second-class royal temple, is located on "Doi Suthep", just 6 kilometers from Chiang Mai city and another 16 kilometers up the mountain. The "Phra That Doi Suthep" is built in the Lanna style, with a Chiang Saen-style chedi. The base is high, with a bell-shaped octagonal shape covered with two layers of gold leaf. The chedi's platform offers a panoramic view of Chiang Mai. The entrance is a seven-headed naga staircase made of plaster. The current abbot is "Phra Thammathena Senadi" (Thongchai Suwannasiri).

"Doi Suthep Temple"

Located on Doi Suthep Road in Suthep Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai Province, "Doi Suthep Temple" is accessible by car via a paved road. Today, I took a red songthaew (a local shared taxi) to the temple. Upon reaching the summit, I was greeted by a breathtaking sea of fog.

There are two ways to reach the temple:

  • Naga Staircase: This iconic landmark of Doi Suthep Temple boasts 306 steps and showcases exquisite artistry. It represents a sacred path to the temple.
  • Funicular: The funicular operates from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with fares of 20 baht for Thai citizens and 50 baht for foreigners. After 6:00 PM, visitors can ascend via the Naga Staircase.

Getting There

By Car

From Chiang Mai city, head towards Huay Kaew Road - Chiang Mai University, passing the Chiang Mai Zoo and the Kru Ba Srivichai Monument. From there, continue towards Doi Suthep. The road is quite steep.

By Public Transportation

You can take a public bus from Chiang Mai city to the front of the zoo. There will be red songthaews (shared taxis) available at the zoo entrance for 60 baht. Alternatively, you can charter a car to take you up.
